It’s Time to Say Goodbye…

Thank you all very much for visiting marketmanila.com during the past 40 months. I wrote my 1,600th post the other day. That comes out to roughly 40 posts per month or 1.35 per day on average, every single day since late 2004. But all good things must come to an end. In the past year, I have gained a whopping 17+ pounds since my abs emerged (peeked at the world) briefly last summer before a trip to Palawan, and when I briefly posted (then deleted) a photo of my midsection for readers. But I cannot continue to put on weight at this pace. Even at just +10 pounds a year, if I lived to 73, I would weigh some 500 pounds and my ashes wouldn’t even fit in a niche designed for four. So my doctors have drawn the line, laid out the warnings, and they are dire. My cholesterol is above 300 despite serious medication, my weight dangerously close to 200 pounds and I supposedly have a FATTY LIVER, as though I were a leading candidate for a human foie gras experiment. So I think it is really best that I stop blogging about food, COLD TURKEY.

The readership of this blog has continued to rise steadily over the past year, and the past month alone registered nearly 380,000 page views, despite the Easter and summer holiday slowdown. Not quite the spectacular numbers of much more recent and younger scandal/gossip blogs, but respectable nonetheless. I would like to think that marketmanila.com has built a wonderful community of Filipinos and others from around the world, with a common interest in food and eating well. Several thousand of you come back each and every day (sometimes twice or thrice), a few more thousand visit a couple of times a week, and thousands more come whenever you feel the urge to drop by. Despite the fact that LESS than 5% of you have ever left a comment, your participation in this blog has been a huge part of making it what it is today, and why I have felt driven to feed it with more and more information, posts, etc. But after 1,600 posts, the well of ideas is running dry and it’s time to call it quits, while at its peak. Think of this as the Seinfeld of food blogs, going off air after their most successful season…

That is, if you didn’t realize it is April 1, and if you clicked the jump to read more, I have well and truly nailed you… HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S DAY!! to you all from Marketman & Family!!! Hahaha, just testing to see how you guys would take such an announcement. We have a family tradition of playing practical jokes on each other, read earlier posts here and here. But today I am safely out of town and away from The Kid, so I am hoping to be spared any more Knorr beef bouillon cubes in my hot shower… As this post goes live, I am probably trying desperately to get up in the middle of the night to make it to a big seafood market that I have been meaning to visit for years. I have all of the remaining posts from a recent beach trip that I still have to finish. I have attempted to make pan de sal “the old fashioned way” some 5 different times to poor results. And we are in the midst of making some travel plans to new places, near and far. This blog WILL eventually come to an end, I am certain of that, but not today. Forgive me if I startled you a bit, but we must retain a sense of humor as we lose our skin’s elasticity… If you want to read more about April Fool’s hoaxes, visit this link for a list of the Top 100 April’s Fools Day Hoaxes in History…

  14. Holy you got me there. I assumed you were influenced by a recent article in the NYT about these two stranged founders of e-gullet who called themselves the fat pack…

  15. You got me! My mind was screaming nooooooooooo!!! all the time.. until the last part :)

  16. Don’t. Ever. Do That. Again.

    Sincerely,
An infrequent but very enthusiastic reader

  17. Jeez!!! Got me there!
I was already thinking about how I can find the time to save all the recipes from you blog before it disappears. Which begs the question — will you ever compile your recipes into a cookbook? Seriously.

  18. Boy! If I hadn’t clicked on the “Read more” link, I would have had a really cranky afternoon! Don’t ever go! I just discovered you recently…

  19. I just recently started to read your blog and was surprised today although I had a feeling it’s an April Fool’s day thingy :)

    BTW, I like your blog!

  20. You really had me going!

I was about to write a long message thanking you for making the soul of the Philippines accessible to me here in NY, and wish you the best for your health.

LOL, relieved to hear it is a joke.

Like Apicio, I thought you had read the Fat Pack article in the NY Times.

  21. My gosh!! I took that seriously MM! GGGRRRRRRR!! I’m soo happy it was just a joke! May you never say goodbye from this blog…u have too many fans! =)

  22. You got me too, it’s only 3/31 here in NY. When I got to the part about the cholesterol and the weight i kept thinking why doesn’t he just blog on low fat low calorie dishes this way he can continue blogging his food passion and we all can benefit from it too? Am I glad it’s just a joke.

  23. Hi Marketman,
I am in the same boat, I have to loose a lot of weight but
I am addicted to filipino food…maybe food in general.

  24. Men! You got me good. I had surfed the site earlier (hahah, at work), and read about the sausage, then just before leaving for work, I decided to open up your site again (since I am bored with nothing to surf anymore and I was hoping you posted a new exciting one), oh.. gosh.. I said, he is quitting.. but then I even said a lil prayer and I muttered good for you for thinking of yourself. And then… whoa.

  25. mm????!! for one moment there i seriously thought that was true. almost not funny cos i read your blog every single day, losing that sort of routine is gonna be hard hard hard!

  26. Had it not been for April Fools Day, I would have been very very pissed. I could not bear a day in the Internet world without first peeking into MM.

  27. Startled??? I was shocked!!! I’m glad it’s just a joke, MM. You’re good. Happy April Fool’s Day!

  28. Checking out Marketmanila every morning is one of the things I make sure I do before breakfast. And then this. I was all, “what?!? Why?!?” until I clicked the read more link. You really got me there, MarketMan.
    Good, huh?
Yeah, Happy April fools’ day to you too!

  29. OMG — It is April Fools Day! MM — you must be kidding. We will all suffer MM withdrawal if this is true. Say it isn’t so!

  30. Wow … I was thinking your departure from the blogosphere was rather abrupt, but not beyond the realm of possibility. =)

  31. Hmph. I actually got really sad. I’ll get my friend (she says that you often go to her store to buy stuff) to play a belated April Fool’s Day trick on you.

  32. BTW, I was waiting for your April Fools day post, so I kinda guessed that this was the joke :)

  33. you really really got me there…..you are a part of life… love ya….Happy April Fool’s Day…
    Mr. Marketman…

  34. touche! i was astonished at the parallelism. i have also been recently warned that I have cholesterol, sugar and fatty liver issues so i was totally nodding at your purported “decision” albeit quite saddened by it. like most, visiting marketmanila has become a daily habit.

now that i realize it was just an april fool’s prank, i also resolved to make my pledge to give up drinking a joke on all i had made it to.

so give me a cold beer (no more hard drinks, promise)and some sisig (isang platito lang). i have found cause to celebrate!

  35. WAAAH! MM..that was mean! you made me worry about your health..and no more fun blog to read :( but thanks for reminding me for april fool’s day..here in south america it’s still march 31, so I still have time to plan for pranks..hehe!

  36. MM, I was honestly on the verge of tears when I was reading this post..You really, really got me there!!! As I was reading the post, I kept saying to myself “NNNNNOOOOOO! THIS CAN’T BE!!”..What a relief it’s just an April Fool’s joke..NICE ONE, MM!!

  37. i knew it was a joke the moment i read the title. but i still read through the post just to be sure.

    happy april fools day, mm

  38. geez MM, if you can only capture our facial reactions while reading the first two paragraphs. my heart was literally sinking!!! what a drama king! :) happy april fool’s day, MM and family, and everyone!

  39. I’m soooo relieved it was a joke!!! I was really saddened at the thought that there wouldn’t be more Marketmanila posts to look forward to everyday. I do hope you don’t get tired blogging, because we won’t get tired reading :)

  40. Hahaha!!!!

Looks like you owe eveyone a drink, MM! Talk about heartstoppers!

Come to think of it, I think I will whip up the pandan juice somewhere in this blog…

    Cheers!

  41. a lot of things crossed my mind while reading the first half of your post and definitely NOT because it was April Fool’S Day…and so the jokes on me! Hahaha! Don’t you ever do that again! :-)

  42. Dear MM,

By your introduction, I thought you have resolved to finally say good-bye to your extra pounds by really struggling to go down to your ideal weight and, come hell or high water, maintain it. But, come to think of it, what will happen to your hordes of fans and followers if you really shut down your blog?

  43. Thank you Marketman! Whew! I thought it was true!

Reading your site before I start my work in the office makes me inspired. It is my morning routine. I am always excited to find recipes to cook for my husband and daughter.

    Happy April Fool’s Day!

  44. GOOD ONE! Only because it’s not April 1 here yet so for just a couple of minutes, my lower jaw was on my keyboard in shock and then I was totally PO’d thinking how rude of you to just plain disappear just when I was really getting into your cooking.

Speaking of your cooking, thanks to you, I’m stuck in a very major rut with shrimp in gata and binagoongan. I’ve been eating the combo for weeks now – since your shrimp in gata post. Isn’t that just absolutely disgusting? It’s like an addiction!

Anyway, Happy April Fool’s to you too and you do know there’s place reserved in hell just for you, yes? ;)

  45. !!@#?#@!! You got me there, MM! Muntik mo na akong paiyakin so early in the day! I’m so glad it’s just a joke! Visiting your site is the first thing I do once I get to work! Pati mga officemates ko, addict na din sa blogs mo! Our day will not be complete without reading your very informative and entertaining site!

  46. har har har….I was about to share with you my diet in controlling cholesterol and et al…when I realize its April fools day! You well know our day wouldnt be complete without reading your site.

  47. i was gonna say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i just started visiting here and he leaves???? was it something i said????…..hehe….

then i saw the date on the upper left hand–being green, it stood out… just the 31st here, MM, but so glad it was just an elaborate joke..

you inspired me to cook a very good pinakbet this weekend (after about 15 yrs)i’m from the region of tinola and laswa..so, don’t you go anywhere…

  48. OMG! I almost screamed. I wanted to shake my laptop as if it were your shoulders and ask you “WHY?! WHY?!” And then I clicked on the jump…
    You got me.

  49. whoa…you got me there…btw…i remember when we were young we do this during december 28, “ninos inocenters”…

  50. You made me sad! Its good its just the April Fools joke! You are not only an excellent blogger but also a comedian! You fooled everyone.

  51. MM,

You got me at “Thank you….”, had me sweating at “I cannot continue…..” and nearly killed me with “… really best… stop blogging”

And then make me LOL at “Happy April Fool’s Day” …. if only you were within reach, I’d have pinched you a hundred times!!!!

  52. as soon as i saw the title, i knew what you were up to, MM! you’ve always been one for pranks, heehee…wonder what The Kid would have pulled on you this time, had you been home?

  53. You almost gave me a heart attack! You almost got me crying! That was mean!!! But so glad it was just a joke! =)

  54. Ha! And I was going to post ‘Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…..!!!”

You got us there, dear MM! But I momentarily freaked out, panicked, at the thought of NOT EVER getting to read your posts, ever.

    Huwag po.

    Don’t even think about it.

You’ve got us all hooked for life, and you are duty-bound to provide our ‘sustenance’ haha.

  55. Oh…CRUEL CRUEL CRUEL! I was already beginning to imagine what I would do without your blog MM! And I was ready to go NUTS on you in this comments section. As my husband and I always say…”check out market manila” about this and that food. Hahaha…to put it bluntly…you’re one of the few food blogs we trust! Well, so far, your reviews were pretty much in sync with our own once we tried certain establishments you mentioned. I’m soo glad this was a joke! I would have hunted you down and pestered you until you revived your blog!

  56. I was already composing a letter in my head begging you to reconsider before I read it was a hoax.

This is one of the best, ad free, (almost) controversy free and accurate, informative blog in the country. Thanks a lot! :)

  57. My heart skipped a beat when i was reading your post… until i found out it ws April fool’s. Well, have a good one MM, and stay safe ;-)

Kaya simula ngayon…homepage na kita, so I can keep an eye on you with the least number of clicks…ha ha ha ha ha!!!

  68. it’s only your blog that i go to when i open my internet.first i correspond to my email then market manila then close.

  69. HI EVERYONE, glad most of you are taking this in the spirit of things. Actually, everything I wrote about my cholesterol, weight and fatty liver is 100% ABSOLUTELY TRUE, it’s just the part about stopping the blog that is NOT true. In fact, I have to do a liver ultrasound soon… and will probably have to start exercising daily in order to reverse the slide… And so far, I have sworn to do this naturally, without tubes, suction, electrical currents, etc. :) But I need to leave this post up the rest of the day to nail more readers, then it will be back to regular programming… Cheers! :)

Wow! I didn’t realize how much I truly enjoy this blog until I saw your message that you’re quitting cold turkey. Boy, your blog is part of my day and will be sorely missed if you do decide to do a Seinfeld on us — quit while ahead.

    I’m glad it’s only a prank! MM, you’re good.

  84. You’re mean, Marketman! Hahaha! Glad you’re really not closing down this blog. :D

  87. Whew what a relief!!! I had a million things on my mind as I was reading your farewell. While panic stricken i was thinking of ways to change your mind, including begging, petition, signature campaign, rallying in front of your house, text campaign, bribery (food items) so on and so forth.
Believe me when I say my weeks will not be complete without your wit, recipes, rants and humour.
I now am so thankful it’s APRIL FOOLS!!!

  90. hi marketman,

haaayy..i thought end na talaga ng blog..will be soo sad pagnanyari un…anyway..take care of your health..

  91. holysmokes MM, I envisioned the foodie circle of the Philippines running amok and jumping out of windows. It’s like imagining a life without food. Actually, the first question in my mind would be, “How the hell is MM gonna live (without the glory of good food)???”

  92. Me too. You got me there! I had goosebumps while reading your post and was already feeling sad and all. Happy April Fool’s to you and your family! I’m so glad you are here to stay.

  93. Ok, MM…
You almost gave me a heart attack! :-) my mind was going “NOOOOOOO!” while reading the first part of your entry until the part where you said it was a hoax. *phew!* it is not april 1st here yet so it did not click right away. all i can say is i am soooooo glad that you are not going away anywhere…THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for not ending this blog yet and I wish that you never end it… and, I have to agree with the other readers, that was a good prank!

  94. huh… i’ve been reading your posts but this is the first time that i have to comment…. huh… you got me… nalulungkot na nga ako tapos…hahaha… anyway, glad it’s just a joke :-)

  95. holy guacamole! what the h*ll was that? kala ko talaga totoo…buti na lang joke lang pala. whew! First site I open is yours since we had internet connection kasi so I’ll be at a loss pag wala to :) I suggest you make a poll on how many were shocked upon first reading your ‘goodbye’ so we’ll know how many you ‘had’ this April Fool’s Day :) Twas jarring but wonderful, too to know how much this site meant to not only me. Don’t stop just yet ‘coz am just starting to experiment with more of your recipes. My hubby was laughing out loud when i conveyed your joke to him, esp. the ‘ashes which can’t fit in the niche part,. He said it serves me right kasi pinilit ko siya to eat leche flan last night (your recipe). Naubos nga niya, eh, noh! Thanks, from the bottom of my heart, MM!!!

  96. WTF! OK, I apologize for my potty mouth, but you really got me in there MM! Haha. Good one, good one. I know that there is always an end to everything, but still I just can’t break up with you,not just yet….

  97. You should have seen my initial reaction Marketman! May kalokohan ka rin talaga. Akala ko seryoso ka. That’s a nice one Marketman! I think you might set a new record for an April Fool’s Prank!

  98. If we had thought balloons over our heads saying what we’re thinking, you would have seen one over mine that said, “WHAAAAT??? NOOOOOOOOO!!!” while I was reading your post. Hehehe! Good one, MM! Happy April Fool’s Day! :-D

  99. Oh, and I forgot to say — unlike your above post, your symptoms are no joke, as I’m sure you already know. Please do take better care of yourself, MM. The advantage of being a good cook like yourself is that you can actually come up with delicious, yet healthy, dishes. I’m sure you can do it, especially since you’re already done it at least once before. Good luck!

  100. you are mean ….. that wasn’t very funny! my heart skipped a beat. Happy April Fool’s Day! Thanks for blogging!

  101. I was just reading through your archives yesterday coming across your daughter’s practical jokes and wondered…hmmm, what will it be tomorrow? Well, surprise! surprise! The joke’s on us…you’re so cruel!!! And it wouldn’t be funny at all to see it end so soon. This blog rocks!

  102. The first thing my husband blurted after I came back from a meeting was “wala na daw na marketman!” I immediately went to your page (I have it bookmarked) and as I read the entry, I told him “this has got to be an April Fool’s prank”. Clicked on the link and sure enough :) — nice try, MM. Happy April Fool’s!

  103. You got me there, MM! I’m so glad and relieved it’s just a joke. Happy April Fool’s!

  104. You got me there, MM! I read your bold-lettered “Happy April Fool’s Day” a split second before I “sobbed” to jayjay that you were going to stop blogging.

Happy April Fool’s Day everyone! I’ve never been so glad to admit being fooled as I am today. Haha.

    More power MM!

  105. The sound you just heard was my heart breaking!

But I am too relieved you were just pulling our leg! Whew. :-)

  106. The moment i read the title i was immediately in panic, towards the end of the first paragraph i was nearly in tears!!! Didn’t realize how much this blog has become a part of my daily routine and how the thought of it coming to an end meant to me. What can i say, you got me real good sa title pa lang hahaha…. So glad it was only a joke. This post has finally made me leave a comment after being a lurker for so long.

  110. MM, when I first read your post, I immediately thought that MM is signing off on April Fool’s Day? Is this a joke, I asked myself and thank God that it is indeed your April Fool’s Day Joke. HAHAHA!!!!! Seriously, if you’re going to sign off, so many of your readers will miss your blog. Look how many made their commments to this piece. I do not usually leave any comment although I read your blog daily. More power MM……

  111. Wow you really got me> for a moment there while reading your posts, I was already saying to my self this can’t be? Where will I surf for my food recipes? Better yet for most part since I started reading your blog I have treated it like my morning newspaper. Thank God its april fools day.

Thank you MM…NO need for prozac anymore :)

  112. Never believed it for a second. Okay so maybe a couple. I had to read everything to be sure. Nice one MM! Lots of 1st time posters!

Maybe next year we can play a prank on you! hehe

  113. Whew, good joke! Although I belong to a little above the last 5% of your readers (I have commented quite sparingly), I am a big fan. I like the totality of your blogs. Your site is not really just about food. It is about LIFE! And you are a very positive promoter of LIVING LIFE.

Which brings me to your increasing avoirdupois and foie gras. Without dissing the western medical profession and medicine, I continually explore the field of complementary healing modalities. Thus, short of giving you unsolicited energy healing advice, I am simply including you in the list of people I send positive loving energy for healing. We can’t have you not writing your blogs for reasons of ill health, can we? =)

I feel the goodwill in your writing. The least I can do is send it back to you!

  114. I was stunned! Couldn’t understand a single word after getting to the “it’s time to call it quits” part.

oh boy am I glad that it was just a joke!

  115. I was very sad that you were going to stop and more concerned about your health! This was the only trick played on me–thank goodness. I do enjoy reading your blog whenever i get home from work. Keep it up. You are doing a lot of good by just sharing your thoughts, your recipes to the rest of the world.

  116. human foie gras experiment reasoning is a classic. bwahahahaha! happy fool’s day.

I was reading your article on my Google reader page and was shocked. Good thing I checked your website. I’m glad it’s just a joke. (Seriously, dude, please don’t try it again.)

There’s not enough blog authors out there with decent writing skills. I am definitely glad that this isn’t your last post.

  133. “My cholesterol is above 300 despite serious medication, my weight dangerously close to 200 pounds and I supposedly have a FATTY LIVER, as though I were a leading candidate for a human foie gras experiment.” Proverbs 19:3

  134. This my first time give a comment in this blog but I am an avid reader for years now and this is the first blog that really caught my attention and time. I’m so glad that it is just an April Fool joke.

  135. I was upset while reading through your blog. But towards the end, you’ve put a silly smile on my face for one of the best April Fool’s jokes ever.

    Thanks!

  136. my first word upon reading the title was bakeeeeeet?
my words after the first paragraph was “oh no! he’s quitting, open a folder and save all the recipes asap”
you really pulled a good one, MM.
i don’t think it will happen in this millenium that you will quit food blogging, but will you give us enough warning so we can save all your recipes? why not the cookbook? i’m sure it will be a big seller, look at all the comments to this post, april’s fool prank pa lang ito, ha?

  137. As Tweety Bird said: You’re bwad MM, vwery vwery baaad! I didn’t get to read your blog yesterday – had a crappy day at the office and that caused withdrawal symptoms. Then you posted this it’s time to say goodbye stuff. I thought – how much crappier can it get? Like the thousands and thousands of people who read your blog, I was getting ready to plead that you reconsider – maybe put in some healthier alternatives, which I’m sure will also help thousands of your readers who now have high cholesterol and fatty liver because of the recipes you’ve posted or food in restaurants you’ve reviewed/shared. This is one of the best blogs I’ve ever come across and it will really really make me sad if you stop writing. That was a good one MM!

  138. Hay, naku, you made me teary eye. We are not used to april fool’s day. Anyhoo, I am relieved. See how many people love you. There are so many magazines, newspapers, internet articles but few come out as sensible, informative yet entertaining as yours.

  139. Thought you were serious there for a moment and it was my first time to log on to your blog. I was thinking just my bad luck, he is going off the air just when I discovered it.

  140. I’m glad I was out yesterday and didnt get the heart attack many of your readers felt reading your april fool’s joke! Please dont stop writing. You give joy to a lot of people. You brighten up our days.If writing about food is risking your health, with your vast knowledge and natural inquisitiveness I think you can still make this blog interesting writing about other things!More power to you MM! P.S.–Why not write on your quest to reversing that fatty liver? That will be interesting!

  141. Manolo, believe it or not, unless someone we mutually know introduced you to the site, I think you would KNOW who I am (as compared to 99% of the readers who do not…). There are 1,600+ posts in the archives, surf backwards for amusement. To all the other readers, sorry to have a giggle at your expense, but I was greatly amused by how many people I nailed on April Fool’s Day… hahaha. Now I have to write some posts!!! Thanks for being such good sports! :)

  142. Good thing I didn’t log on yesterday and today read the sherbet post ahead of the april 1 joke. haha. good one marketman. please don’t stop writing.

  143. oh my mm I kept yelling NO! while I was reading this but then again the sherbet post is already up before I read it lol!

  144. You had me there. That’s what I deserve for pulling pranks on people in the office yesterday!

Whilst I was reading the first part, I was also (like some of the comments above) thinking of suggesting blogging like Heidi at http://www.101cookbooks.com for a healthier MM, but… I guess that’s not a bad idea, having read your comments down here! :)

Goodluck on your liver and over-all health and happy april fool’s!

  145. mm,

i was wondering… is this one of those entries wherein you try to bring the lurkers out of the woodworks?

  146. I was out in circulation, having slow internet connection from Quezon province.

Now I read the first lines and I thought it was for real. Good I read the rest of the article, and was just making a quick think on who did the Chicos posting.

Am sure you were laughing as you were typing this post.

  147. Really good MM! Tears started to gather as I read your post, at the end I gave a big sigh of relief that it’s only a joke. Do take care of your health MM…

  149. Yes, a mutual acquaintance told me about your blog. I think it ia really good and with great photos too! It is inspiring me to put up my own blog. Keep up the good work. Don’t worry, your secret identity is safe with me.

  150. OMG! You truly got me. I was gonna suggest pa naman sana to just make it a vegetarian blog while your liver recovers and your cholesterol a more tolerable level tapos April Fool’s joke pala. Hahaha! Hay naku, I was getting mad pa naman kasi I haven’t checked out the blog in a few days only to get the goodbye entry. MM, sarap mo’ng sapakin ngayon. Hehe. For giving lots of us near heart and panic attacks. Wa ako ma say. Just keep up the good work and the pranks coming! :)
