If memory serves me right, our word for avocado derived from the Nahualt ahuácatl which is said to mean scrotum. They were probably dealing with the ancestor of Hass avocado which is small, egg shaped and covered with a dark, rough and wrinkled skin that presented the striking resemblance. Again, one of those images that never crossed your mind but once suggested never leaves it. At least those Inca people were quite accurate compared to the greeks who imagined orchids as also similarly formed but is really quite a stretch for the modern eye to imagine.

Arce, what an apt brand for ice-cream. In Spanish maple syrup is jarabe de arce. Jarabe is xarope (say sharope) in Portuguese which gave us syrup. We have a similar sounding brand of ice-cream here but it’s spelled Maypole.

Hi MM, I was in Jakarta from 2002 to 2005 although I travelled quite a bit all over Indonesia managing humanitarian/development programs. I was transferred to Aceh in 2005 for our Tsunami Response Program and then moved to the Balkans after 2 years..I have wonderful memories of Indo so it is always a thrill when you refer to your time there and when you write something that reminds me of it.

Anyhow, I just had a wonderful avocado salad with shrimps at the Movenpick Hotel (Deadsea). It was a surprisingly wonderful pairing, one which you might want to try, if you haven't yet. But then again, is there something you haven't tried yet???

One of my favorites, you just can't go wrong with avocados in sandwiches, shakes, ice cream, guacamole, or Mexican style salad with corn, red kidney beans, and tomatoes on a bed of lettuce. Joey of 80 breakfasts recently had a post of avocado cubes in an omelet which I must try. Although I haven't had it for a while, Arce had wonderful avocado ice cream that was distinct from the rest - perhaps they used coconut cream? The taste still lingers after all these years.

Mmmm, yum! I usually have avocados in salads but a creamy avocado shake is my husband's favorite! He likes to turn them into popsicles for our 2 year old daughter too! :)

Nadia, I need to try slathering it... millet, avocado trees aren't the most regal, but they look pretty cool when the fruit are hanging off of them... MP, when were you in Jakarta, I was based there in the early 90's ... Artisan, yes, great in BLT's, ed b, I generally don't buy avocados unless the vendor has one cut open for me to see... if they come from the same batch as the sample, you have a much higher chance of getting non-veiny ones...

Delightful avocado!

Avocado shake, avocado ice cream (home made) are two childhood faves! Here in Melbourne, avocado's more of a savory than sweet food. When I brought the avocado ice cream to work, the Asians loved them, the Aussies couldn't get their head around it...
