terrey: i did a quick check on wikipedia as to the number of times Sampras faced Agassi in the finals vs. how often Federer has faced Nadal.

Sampras faced Agassi in 5 Grand Slam Finals and 5 Masters Series Finals. Federer has faced Nadal in 7 Grand Slam Finals and 8 Masters Series Finals.

It's not straight-forward to say if Fed or Sampras had the more competitive playing environment (Roddick, Murray, Djokovic, Hewitt aren't exactly pushovers), but I don't think one can claim that the Federer-Nadal rivalry is just hyped-up.

aha! im not a federer fan nor a nadal fan...i am stuck with the sampras-agassi-courier-chang---etc etc era. federer indeed is a league of his own but to me, there will always be a "doubt" to how good he really is. he doesnt have the likes of sampras or agassi, goran, becker, courier on the other side of the court during finals. nadal is not consistently on top of his form. some people are just playing the rivalry to spruce up the interest back in the game of tennis since the above mentioned players retired especially agassi. john mcenroe had bjorn borg, etc as rivals sampras had agassi(how many times did they face each other in finals), but federer had none!

What an amazing feat, to tie Sampras' record of 14 major trophies in Roland Garros where he fell one win short of raising the trophy for the past three years. Tennis world thought he would tie it in Australia. No one gave him a chance here at the French until the unfortunate, unimaginable and shocking loss of perhaps the greatest clay-courter of all time, Nadal, in the fourth round. Since then, Federer had so much pressure on him. Now everyone's saying this is his time, destiny is on his side. It's his loss if he doesn't finally win it. Just imagine all of that playing on your mind. The French crowd knows their tennis; they always wanted to see play, cheering both competitors, at times rooting for the underdog to prolong the match. This time, they were all behind Federer. They wanted him so badly to win it as much as he did. He seized the moment. He played the match in style. Alas, no more doubts about his greatness. Federer is truly a class of his own.

Fed is the ultimate tennis royalty being one of only 6 to complete a career Grand Slam!

Fabian M, while I too am wishing for a Fed-Rafa final clay encounter, I think he need not play Rafa to cement his claim. Fed dominated men's tennis for five years winning nearly every Grand Slam since 2004, save for French, and the occasional Australian and Wimbledon (in which he was usually in the final or semi-final). He won Gold in the Beijing Olympics and has been the Laureus World Sportman of the Year for 4 consecutive years since 2005. In my book, any men's pro tennis player, Rafa including, has a lot of catching up to do before they can wrest the title "The Best Tennis Player" from King Fed.

Hi MM. Nice Shirt by the way :)

You may be inviting a firestorm opening up a discussion on Roger Federer. :D Just want to point out that it's hilarious that the we say that winning this tournament will be his comeback. Any other player who has made 20 Grand slam semi-finals in a row isn't in need of a comeback. :) Federer's own standards have made his still sterling record seem so-so.

I wouldn't call the 3-set match un-inspiring. Soderling wasn't playing terribly. The 2nd set tie-break was sublime for Roger. He played beautiful tennis for 3 sets.

re: Fed being too Swiss-controlled, well it's something he had to learn to be, as in his early early days (2000-2002), he got quite emotional during losses and broke rackets. It's his control that helped him move to the level where he is now. And anyway, after the final point he lets the guard down and starts crying, so ok lang. He he.

Ubs: Ideally, to cement his claim to best player ever, he has to be beat Nadal on the Clay in the French. But one can't blame him for not doing so this time around. It was Rafa who fell in the 4th Round. Roger can't help that.
