I am so sad that Tita Cely is gone, she was the original bicol express queen, discovered that recipe even if she wasn't from the Bicol region. I love her sinigang and laing, lechon kawali etc. I always drop by her sinigang bar outlet at market, market whenever i have the opportunity. the last time i saw her was when i was still pregnant with my baby boy (2009)and i was craving for her sinigang and lechon kawali. she even made me try the biscocho from batangas, and told me that she was helping her niece earn a living, and i bought tons of it since i loved it and was needing some carbohydrates everytime i feel nauseated. cheryll and the rest of the fantasia group would always do our eyeball at tita cely's stall in market market. i will miss her and her food, i will miss her hugs and kisses, because she never failed to shower me with her affection everytime she sees me. I often told her that we she go back to Davao and see Cheryll, but she was so busy with her business. I was shocked to know that her stall in market market was already closed, and my friend told me that tita cely was working as a consultant for tita glenda barretto.
My prayers are with you Tita Cely....you will be missed, and I am glad that I had the chance of knowing you and was able to taste your famous sinigang, laing, bicols express etc.

Thanks for this post MM, I was among the fortunate ones who met Tita Cely. On a flight to Davao, the person seated next to me exchanged seats with her. She asked me why I looked so down, I told her About my husband confined at the CCU due to heart attack. She gave me a Bisugo soup and an ampalaya salad recipe to cook for my husband, and he loved it. She gave me her cell number in case I need her help and invited me to visit her at the market market anytime I fly to mnl again. She was most interested to meet my mom and aunt who are great bulakenya cooks. I never got to introduce them, how I regret not making time. She will be missed

This is sad news. I remember her from her sinigang bar at one of those buildings at P. Tamo Extension when I used to work around the area 10 years ago. She was such a mother figure, and would generously ask us office workers to sample her soup or vegetable dish of the day for free. May she rest in peace.

We will surely miss T. Cely, eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord. We are family friends due to T. Cely, if I have the facts right, worked with my Dra. aunt before she opened The Grove; she being a good, good friend of another aunt and all of my mom's family and the older pamangkins. There is a cookbook coming up compiled by her nephews and to be edited by Julie Yap Daza. Her only surviving brother is in the States. She was 73. Let's support her with our prayers and buying her cookbook when it comes out.

My condolences to Tita Cely's family. I used to buy food from her stall at Salcedo Market but I used to see her a lot around 1970-1972 when she had the very first "Grove" restaurant at the Grove, Los Banos near the UPLB gate. On those Salcedo Market occasions, I would always bring up some of our common friends who were her brods in Beta Sigma. That was always my opening, "Tita Cely, regards daw sabi ni Tony Frio, nasa East Timor siya...".
