tintin, we use floralife flower food or crystal clear flower food. Here is a link to why folks in the industry or at home use the powder. If you don't have flower food, you may just want to put a bit of bleach in the water in your vase... that retards bacterial growth in the water. However, bleach and flower food is a no-no in good lead crystal vases or in metals... they can harm them. Some folks use sugar, aspirin, etc. and the floralife folks suggest these don't work as well as their stuff (of course they would say that), but we have been using flower food for years and it does seem to help... Sister sends industrial sized buckets of the stuff in balikbayan boxes every couple of years or so...

hi MM! in your earlier post on the flowers you bought, you mentioned about putting them on cold water with flower food (or is it vitamin?), what exactly is that? I also love fresh flowers in the house, but find them expensive so I only use them during Christmas holidays. but reading about your post gave me a very good insight. thanks sir.

Katrina, yes, odd how the mixed hued ones are often considered "second-class" -- I too, like the "mutts"... millet, it's a bamboo cabinet in the background, Chinese, probably early 20th century. F, it's our dining table, actually two tables put together. Made from old panels from a house, re-purposed as dining tables (were supposed to be our desks, but they wouldn't fit in a den), the center panels are made tindalo, with this chracteristic sheering effect, and the edges from kamagong, you can get a better view of it from this old post. https://www.marketmanila.com/archives/a-birthday-dinner

Really, MM, the multi-colored, mixed-hued roses are considered undesirable?! I've always found them much more stunning! I love how it looks as if the tip of each petal was dipped in a contrasting color. The variation in tones and intensity of shades gives the blooms depth and emphasizes the many layers of petals -- which is what I like about roses (not usually my favorite of flowers).

I used to think i was weird to actually prefer these "runts" to the "princesses". I have always liked variegated anythings (mums, roses, dandelions, even fruits and veggies) and would squeal with delight if presented with a bouquet of these beauties. I find plain red, pink, or yellow roses a bit ho-hum.

These are really pretty!

Webster gives you three ways to pronounce vase: veys, veyz, vahz. I use vahz if they are cut crystal and french(?) like the two above.

reminds me of 'my' roses for this year.. hubby, who is not so great with orders online, mustered the courage and figured out how to order and sent surprise bouquets 'to make my day' (been very sick and adjusting to medical treatment) the last couple of months. I simply loved the fusion of marbled and stunning bright colors to brighten up a dreary, cold, grey winters day....and with thoughts from pinas to up here north....isnt that just uplifting? oh yes, it indeed makes up my day! sans needles, grams of pills and thousands of tests...
