It’s interesting to note that in California, salted cooking wine is not charged with an excise tax. Maybe an exception can be made on taxes for salted cooking wine since the alcohol on these cannot be consumed as it will be eventually be cooked out. This being said, I totally agree that higher taxes on cigarettes and alcohol has to be legislated to discourage abuse.

On the MSG issue, I know a person working for a large multinational firm who got promoted to a very high position in that company on the back of the huge success of their flavored msg products. It surprised me that it had grown into a multi-billion peso industry. There was even a huge campaign that emphasized MSG’s safety and how it enhanced the umami flavor in dishes.

Monty, personally, I am ALL FOR a serious SIN TAX bill. I think cigarettes and liquor here need to be taxed a LOT MORE to discourage consumption and use the revenues for the inevitable health ramifications like emphysema, lung cancer, liver cancer, etc. We have one of the highest percentages of smokers in this country and some of the lowest cigarette prices in the region. Unfortunately, wine will be included in such a bill, but I think that’s fair if there are other benefits received by the population as a whole. Frankly, I would go for an MSG BILL as well… maybe that would help to get people to eat more real food… rather than all the cheaper, processed and flavor enhanced crap that is making it onto everyone’s plates these days…

The sin tax bill will raise taxes to P250 per liter for wines under P500, while those over P500 will be taxed at P700 per liter. I use cheap wines (around P200 liter) primarily for cooking, so I guess the price for these will probably double if the law gets passed.
