Bosc Pears, Yoghurt and Pure Cream at S&R…

pr1

The folks at S & R Price are being really nice. They sent Marketman an update on their increasing roster of products and are clearly responding to an earlier post on this pr2website with incredible attention…they now have tubs of yoghurt (not from Greece, Joey and Mila) but Australian and as close as I have found to non-sweet yoghurt in Manila so far… and dried figs and dates as well. I was at the Fort Bonifacio store a couple of days ago and I bought our turkey there, also got 2 containers of Bulla Pure Heavy Cream (YAHOO!) and was so incredibly thrilled to find fresh Bosc pears in the fruit department. There were also strawberries and cherries on offer as well. The chocolate covered raisins were incredibly fresh, with the plumpest of raisins hiding within. And our chocolate Labrador is utterly thrilled that her favorite doggie cookies are back in stock. I don’t mean to sound like I work for S&R, because I don’t, but I am grateful that they are getting back in gear…a welcome improvement to the otherwise bleak food retail atmosphere of the past few months.

Readers should continue to post items that they wish S & R might carry, as I understand the store’s staff read this blog fairly often, and who knows…they pr3might listen and work wonders… As for me, consistent stocks of heavy cream, some good butter, maybe Ghirardelli chocolate chips, continuing improvements to fruit stocks, consistent meat stocks, etc. will keep me coming back for more… As for the Bosc pears, just peel ripe but still firm pears and poach them in a pan with an entire bottle of red wine and some sugar or just sugared water and serve them at room temperature with a puree of raspberries (frozen will work) with a bit of fruit liquer and some whipped cream or vanilla ice cream…YUM. This is a very elegant dessert, perfect for holiday entertaining, and extremely easy to do!

  1. Oh, my mom was able to purchase those yoghurts for me. I am lactose intolerant and I’m prescribe to take a daily dose/tub of it. I liked it!!!
I am hoping for a quality flour please, Valrhona chocolates for baking, definitely nice unsalted butter, Boudin bread from SF and I’m not sure if I have seen some rolled beef for roasting there too. Oh, and CHEESE,more more variety like those used to be in Megamall supermarket when it initially opened years ago!

  2. aridelros, I don’t think S&R is really targetted at the artisanal, perhaps a smaller shop would be more appropriate for those terrific sounding, locally sourced items. A warehouse club, by definition would seem to me to have other items on their agenda… As for being paid for the suggestions, for me, finding the stuff that I want to buy actually STOCKED in a store is payment enough…

  3. By the way, I forgot to ask about premade phyllo dough. I’m not sure if its just me or it isnt really available in any specialty stores I’ve been to. I do errands at a fast pace thus havent probably spotted it yet. Ever seen it around Marketman?
I do like baking from scratch but having tried doing phyllo dough for Thanksgiving had caused me body aches! I hope S & R will have some.

  4. What I’d like to see available in S&R is their kosher hotdogs that they serve. Also, some good and different varieties of flour.

Tulip, I’ve spotted some phyllo wrappers at Santi’s Rockwell sometime last month.

  5. Oh and I would like to add different kinds of chocolate chips for baking, madagascar vanilla, more imported chips like Cheetos Twister, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, old-fashioned candies in can, Dr. Pepper and Bonbon lollipops.

  6. We went there and are going to be applying for membership soon (I was never a member and C’s membership lapsed too long ago)! I am definitely going to check out that Australian yogurt! Thanks!

  7. tulip, yes, Santis does often carry phyllo dough, particularly at its main branch on Yakal street or by order at the Forbes Park/San Antonio branch. and you are even nuttier than me, I would NEVER attempt to make phyllo! Heehee. Cai, doctor Pepper sometimes at Rustan’s and at Cash & Carry if you are lucky. Joey, be prepared for a rising grocery bill if you get an S & R card, it’s inevitable!

  8. Marketman I know, I do get really nuts sometimes! I like trying tedious kitchen work for once just for the experience. Shucks, I often go to Santis but didnt even notice it. I’ll do really purchase phyllo dough next time to save time making Baklavas and phyllo rolls. Thanks Marketman and Cai!

By the way, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is available in all Rustan’s supermarket. Dr. Pepper is also available in Unimart, Cherry Foodarama and Hi-Top Supermarkets. Imported big bags of chips are also available at Hi-Top, 1 aisle dedicated to such.

  9. Went to the “new” S&R today. Impressed. Thought I was going to wait for the longest time to get my card renewed when I saw a long line. It was a breeze. I commend the fast service. Feasted on downey, ivory snow, wesson canola and other what-nots. Thumbs up!

  10. i should drop by to visit and renew my membership. my mom was in the alabang branch and she said they had tempur pillows there. cheaper than rustan’s. i’m wishing there’s cheesecake from the cheesecake factory there. anyone knows if tehre’s any? :)

  11. To my knowledge, no fresh pine trees this year trish. Maricris, I did see cream cheese and mozarella there, there were also several other cheeses but not sure if they had ricotta. I did see one tub of mascarpone but it was the last one. You can get ricotta at Santis Yakal or other smaller branches. Mandy, according to winglip up above, they have that cheesecake…which I have never tried before.

  12. here’s another quick & easy poached pear idea from Food magazine: combine together a little butter, brown sugar & cinnamon in a glass bowl, place peeled & cored pear in the bowl & microwave for about 8 mins depending on how ripe the pear is…great to hear that so many food items are now available in Manila…what about frozen puff pastry?? My cousin said she couldn’t find it there.

  13. MM: Nice to hear S&R are taking your feedback very seriously. I’d sign up for membership but knowing me (and the fact that I don’t run my own household anyway) I’d probably be able to go twice a year tops. Hope they still have that pizza/calzone stand by the cashiers.

  14. I went shopping at the new S&R today and I came across this really great tasting yogurt! It’s called Bulla Greek Yogurt, and it has a layer of fruit on top. My favorite in particular is the Baked Apple flavour, it is real apples baked and put on top! Also I was really glad that I finally could find Haloumi cheese here in the Philippines!

  15. MM, have you checked out Puregold Duty Free at Clark lately? I went there last month and again this weekend and I’d say each time I’d have to stop myself from blowing my entire monthly grocery budget! The selection is enormous. S&R sure pales in comparison in terms of variety and value. They’re owned by the same company so they have products in common, except that they’re way cheaper at Puregold. What they don’t have though is S&R’s freezer & produce section.

The only thing that sours the deal is the cost of gas plus the high toll fees but I suggest a stop at C Italian Dining for some Panizza or Aling Lucing’s near the “riles” to make the trip truly worth it :-)

  16. There are frozen puff pastry sheets at S&R. Saw some frozen shortcrust pastry sheets too. Australian made. And quite reasonable.

  17. I was hoping they have a certain variety of Post breakfast cereals that have raisins in them, but none available. I forgot the exact name of the cereal.

  18. Kudos to S&R for their Moet + Chandon Champagne!
Made it sweet for me on on Valentine’s!
As for my daily nourishment, love the SPICY hungarian sausages, have been passing it around to my extended family…
Should be getting commission from S&R….
Love the Churros at the Pizza Parlor, without the Bavarian cream… Try their Thailand Hom Mali Jasmine Rice! Authentic! and imported straight from Thailand.

  19. I love shopping in S&R! :D The pink guava juice that they’re selling is soooo good! I buy my popcorn here too (Chef Tony’s!). Yum yum!

  20. do i have to have a membership card to go in s&r? or i can just walk in like any other grocery?

  21. Hello Marketman. Where is this so called S & R store located. I was very happy to know that u can find butterball turkey at that store. Also, cream and yoghurt. These things are very hard to find.

  22. bheng, there are several S&R locations, Alabang Town Center, Near Baclaran at the reclaimed area, the largest one at Fort Bonifacio and one other one I think. Look them up in a directory…
