“EMILALVA” LEFT THIS COMMENT ON THE PREVIOUS POST ON MARKETMANILA TOTES

“I’ve been following ur site for sometime now. I didnt know what to make out of it but now I realize that it really is geared for commerce. Sad how people use charity as an excuse to sell jams, marmalades – even tote bags. Grabe”

It was left by a first time commenter, who did not leave a real email address, and I normally just delete those, but I thought I would let it through so that I could respond to it, and ask Marketmanila’s regular readers to pause from their busy lives for about ten seconds and create a juicy curse for this idiot. And at the bottom, let me tell you why I think they wrote this… Ah, what would a slow Friday afternoon be like without the EMILALVA’S of the world??? Here is my response:

EMILALVA,

YOU ARE A FIRST TIME COMMENTER AND NOT SURE IF YOU LEFT A LEGITIMATE EMAIL ADDRESS (YOU DIDN’T, I CHECKED). BUT IF, AS YOU SAY, YOU HAVE BEEN READING THIS BLOG FOR SOME TIME, THEN HOW CAN YOU IN ANY WAY SAY THAT IT HAS A COMMERCIAL SIDE TO IT? THE T-SHIRT AND TOTE PROGRAM IS RAISING FUNDS FROM READERS AND 100%, I REPEAT 100% OF THE FUNDS GO STRAIGHT TO THE PUBLIC SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMS. I GIVE DONORS A GIFT IF THEY WANT IT. SO FAR, I HAVE SPENT PHP65,000 OF MY OWN MONEY AND THAT IS MY CONTRIBUTION TO CHARITY THIS CHRISTMAS. AT NO POINT IS READER MONEY USED FOR THE SHIRTS OR TOTES. SO HOW CAN THAT BE COMMERCIAL? I HAVE NEVER EVER MADE ANY MONEY OUT OF THIS SITE, AND HAVE SPENT OVER PHP500,000 OVER 3 YEARS TO DESIGN IT, MAINTAIN IT, FEED IT, ETC. AND THAT ISN’T EVEN COUNTING MY TIME.

SO, WHILE I HAVE NEVER OUTRIGHT INSULTED A READER ON THIS BLOG BEFORE, YOU HAVE THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE FIRST…YOU ARE STUPID. STUPID AND STUPIDER THAN STUPID!!! YOU ARE UNINFORMED, SPEAK WITHOUT FACTS AND STUPID. YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO SHOULD VOLUNTARILY REMOVE YOURSELF FROM THE HUMAN GENE POOL SO THAT WE NEVER AGAIN HAVE TO DEAL WITH YOUR UTTER LACK OF LOGIC AGAIN.

SO WHAT, POSSIBLY COULD HAVE MOTIVATED YOUR SNIDE COMMENT ABOVE? FACT, THEN YOU ARE WRONG. FICTION, THEN YOU ARE PITIFUL. EVEN IF YOU DIDN’T USE YOUR REAL NAME, LET ME TELL YOU, I TOTALLY BELIEVE IN KARMA AND I HOPE THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE 10,000+ PEOPLE WHO WILL READ THIS POST WILL SEND YOU BAD VIBES… AND IF YOU DID IT JUST TO RILE ME UP, WELL HERE IS THE FINAL COUNT… ROUGHLY 12,500 FULL MEALS WILL BE SERVED TO MALNOURISHED SCHOOL CHILDREN OVER THE COMING MONTHS, TOTALLY AS A RESULT OF MARKETMANILA READERS’ GENEROUS GIFTS. MARKETMAN WILL BE OUT PHP65,000 PLUS A WHOLE LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT. AND YOU, SMALL LITTLE YOU, WILL STILL BE STUPID.

YOU HAVE NOW, IN ONE SHORT COMMENT, REPLACED THE FISH PAN LADY IN THE NUMBER ONE SPOT OF STUPID COMMENTERS ON MARKETMANILA! AND IF YOU HAVE BEEN READING ME FOR SOME TIME, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT IS A MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT.

I HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD CHRISTMAS AND CHOKE ON YOUR FOOD.

MARKETMAN

Marketman was trying to James Bond this moment and the only plausible explanation I have is that I caught some folks trying to “stuff” the comment box of the recent post on “What do you Sell” and because of the stuffing attempt, I used my discretion to delete all of those comments and the purveyor they were referring to… And if you aren’t that person RESPONSIBLE FOR COMMENT “STUFFING”, then you are even DUMBER than I thought. P.S., every time you leave a comment, you register an IP address on my system, which eventually leads to a “source” of the comment, even if you fake YOUR email. Just in case you were too stupid to know that. That is how I found pathetic folks trying to stuff comments on Cupcakes by Sonja, and recently, on a supplier of cakes in a recent post.

Hi MM. I understand you’re angry but why give this guy the satisfaction of seeing you all worked up?

Your loyal readers know that you’re not making money from the site anyway. Just ignore Emilalva or whoever he may be.

So don’t judge other people just because you were able to read an entry or two. Just do what you have to do MM we support you 100%

MM, jst think of these nuisance readers as bitter spices of life. They are unwelcomed guests, who want to steel the show and grab attention by being tackless, nasty, rude and most of all stupid. He or she, like the fish pan lady are both KSP (kulang sa pansin) and probably ipinaglihi sa ngitngit at sama ng loob, he he. I hope their kind get scarce in finding their way into your blog. Hindi sila nakakatuwa and they ruin one’s day. Cheers MM, I believe you can fight the good fight of faith and make the good works prevail for the good of many.

  29. mikel says:

methinks this idiot is also a food blogger who is really envious of you MM. don’t give it another thought. you’re too thin-skinned. being out there in the public domain, you have to expect the lunatic fringes to put you down some time.

    Nov 9, 2007 | 10:19 pm

  30. Myra P. says:

kb, I think emilalva got such a reaction is because he/she was completely wrong on so many important points, the main one being the assertion that MM uses this site for commerce. In fact, this is the only site I know of that has zero advertising. The only commerce he encourages is among his readers, and usually for locally-sourced goods. The condescending tone of emilalva’s post was especially grating.

    Nov 9, 2007 | 10:28 pm

  31. pusa says:

i’m fairly new to your site as well but the first thing i’ve noticed about this food blog is the lack of advertisement, actually no ads at all, which really surprised me knowing that you have tons of visitors everyday! and i’ve also read from one of your post that you dont accept invitations / freebies from food establishments for you to review because you dont want to be biased and would rather spend your own money made me a fan

so that stupid remark is really annoying and i understand how pissed off you are with that emilalva! he is pathetic

    Hello,

It is common nowadays that food blogs today have banner advertisement. Major companies treat food blogs as a focus group. MM has kept his blog pure and true. MM could have accepted advertisement to make profit but he decline.

It is noble of him to give back to the community. To my knowledge, 80 percent of the Philippine population is experiencing poverty. We must share our blessings with the less unfortunate. MM has done just that.

Emilalva was out of place and her status is now minuscule.

    All the best,

    Butz

Just for laughs – paraphrasing favorite putdowns I’ve come across:
    (a) emilalva is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot;
    (b) When emilalva’s IQ reaches 50, he should sell; (and my personal favorite…)
    (c) It’s impossible to believe the sperm that created emilalva beat out 1,000,000 others.

Emilalva, you claim to have followed this blog for some time and yet not one word in your comment made sense at all! If you had any doubts or questions about the t-shirt and tote project all you had to do was ask Market Man.

No matter what motives you may have, you deserves the lashing! Shame on you, emilalva, for throwing such vile accusations on a totally selfless & charitable endeavor!!!

ala-CSI would be a more apt description of your tracking activities =)

anyway, David Lebovitz seems to sum it up nicely, though his post refer to online restaurant critics…

“…that people use their real names when leaving restaurant reviews on the internet.

If you have something to say, especially if you’re going to be negative, why not put your name on it to give it validity?

If you’re truly convinced of your opinions, do it with your real name. It carries much more weight and it far more helpful to others if that’s your intention. If it’s not, you shouldn’t be putting things out there in the first place…”

or perhaps this EMILALVA is another blogger who doesn’t get that many hits…it’s unfortunate that he/she sees negative and bad out of something that is positive, true and good…that’s another reason why our country is such in a rut… a lot of people look with suspicious eye to people or organizations who do good, and yet allow corruption to rear its ugly head in our society…it would have been better had EMILALVA directed his/her vitriole by sending “ate glo evicted ka na” postcard to malacanang….

MarketMan..relax,you might have a heart attack..don’t worry, the rest of your blog readers who really read and UNDERSTAND your blog know your true intentions :)

Noypetes..Market Manila may be an open blog, but it is MM’s personal blog first and foremost.we are simply lucky that he shares all of the information (which are very useful and entertaining) with the readers.he has every right to express his opinions and respond to whoever he wants,as well as delete unwelcome comments, especially on subjects that are intended for charitable purposes.indeed we are responsible for whatever we say or write and maybe MM may have used harsh words (although I personally don’t thinks so hehe), but if that is how he feels, let it be. I believe most readers understand where he’s coming from. MM may be better off with a kind and intelligent reply, but he is entitled to his own response much the same as you and I are entitled to our own, only that we can freely do so in this site with his permission. otherwise we might as well be ranting and raving on our own sites about anything that we think we know better more than anyone else.by the way, i send no ill will with this reponse to your comment :)

The thing that is so off base about the comment is that you seem to go out of your way NOT to make it about commerce. Over and above. I have read soooo many blogs that have posts here and there that are little more than advertisements for a certain company or product.

It is really a mean thing to mention your Christmas project. To do something so nice and have someone imply there are less than good intentions behind that is really a crappy thing.

Hi everyone, thanks for the comments. I should say, however, that I get this sort of bizarre comment about 3-4x a week, and more in the past year, and I mostly just delete them. However, this one deserved a response, in my opinion, and it took just minutes to type it. So if I even average it out to say 2x a week for 3 years, I have gotten roughly 300+ such comments and I have strongly reacted to about 3 of them or just 1%… I think that is pretty restrained for Marketman, if you knew me in person, it is VERY RESTRAINED, heeheehee… :) I also receive somewhere between 80-120 comments per day, and roughly 50-60 private emails as well, so the volume is nearly unmanageable, and I have stopped responding to ALL emails as I used to, now i just respond when I can be of help…

    Good day, MM.

I totally empathize with you on the urge to vent your irritation towards moronic tirades like this against your clearly noble undertakings. After all, this blog is fully your domain and you can deal with cretins like this in any way you damn well please.

With the deluge of supportive comments you’ve been getting which mirror my sentiments as well, I guess I need not throw in anymore my own two cents’ worth of riling against the perpetrator of this deed.

But I am refraining from mentioning the name he/she/it claims to have for the following reason.

I just feel I need to caution you based on my personal experience – it could be possible the perpetrator used the name of another person who is most likely innocent and still clueless to these goings-on, and the probable reason he was bold enough to post that imbecilic and highly provocative comment is because he intends to malign both you AND that name he used.

    Makes sense, doesn’t it?

I should know – I’ve been personally victimized by these scumbags some months ago. I posted several comments in another widely read blog (can I mention Anton Diaz’s Our Awesome Planet?) regarding a topic which I felt was being unfairly lambasted by some elements with shady intentions (commenters who I also discovered to have provided either fictitious or other unknowing parties’ email addresses as their own), and I ended up being insulted and maligned by the same in succeeding comments. I thought that’s only as far as they can go and I can just shrug off their malicious retorts. Until I started receiving quite a number of emails from other blogsites I’ve never encountered before who claim they’ve gotten insulting messages from me. Upon scrutiny, I discovered a spate of nonsensical and downright irritating comments posted on those sites using MY name and email addy. The perpetrator/s even engaged in nonsense debates with other commenters in a few of those sites to further fan the flames. Though I tried to rectify the situation by exposing the malicious deed exacted and claiming my outright innocence in all those proceedings, at the end of the day the damage to my reputation, as well as considerable bother on my part, has been done still.

Yes, repulsive critters like these who thrive on satiating themselves with purely non-productive endeavors at the expense of others do exist in the democratic realms of cyberspace. Sigh…

So just in case my suspicion is right, my sympathies also go to the probably hapless person victimized in this case (who may be wondering at this point why he/she is getting somewhat negative vibes from some unknown source).

So people, let’s give it the benefit of the doubt, shall we? Just a thought…

    More power to you, MM!

  76. Marketman says:

Teddycapz, you are completely correct, and that is the reason I normally obliterate comments of this nature when no real email address is left. However, in this case, it isn’t a full name used, nor is there an address, so I refer to the commenter as the name left. In the case where someone lifts a name, and I am aware that the email address has been lifted, and it can be confirmed, I have removed the comments and any reference to it. It is so interesting that you raise this point, because in the fishpan lady case, the first person left a functioning email address, but in subsequent libelous statements, they faked the address, but all messages where from the same IP source. When I emailed the original address it was a live address under the specific name of the individual… she chose not to answer the email. Then later, from another address, but same IP claimed she was the real person, yet when I told her I had sent an email to the first comment’s address, I never heard from her again. I totally agree some care is necessary, and in your case, the question is how they obtained your email address, unless it was public on your blog… Ahhh, there will always be these types of folks, thank goodness they are a small minority… Prior to my rant, I also googled the name to make sure it didn’t appear in several locations and I could confirm addresses if possible. It does seem to be a NON-POPULAR commenters tag…

MM, it is assuring for us readers to know you do some rather effective sleuthing before you deal accordingly with such condescending commenters.

As to the question how those ignoble people got to know and use my email addy for dubious purposes, in the OAP blog (with all due respect) the commenters’ email addy or website URL pop up when the cursor is pointed on the tag given. To my misfortune, sad to say…

At any rate, that’s the reason why I tend to doubt the true identities of commenters with the audacity to post messages blatantly meant to ruffle feathers and rattle cages. These sleazeballs certainly know better than to indicate their real selves being fully aware of the ramifications and aftermath of their incendiary remarks.

But of course we can always entrust their fate to our all-knowing and almighty God, right?

Thanks for taking time to reply lengthily to my previous comment, MM.

Hello MM! I haven’t been visiting your blog lately but when I read this, I just had to respond. Unfortunately there are people who just don’t have anything better to do in life than leave “negative” comments on one’s blog (a sign of their “unhappiness” and “jealousy” I guess). A similar thing happened regarding my post about my daughter’s puppy’s “grooming.” I was accused of getting a dog just for its cuteness and fluffiness and even though the groomer had botched up the puppy’s “haircut” . . . I was to blame for not brushing the hair to remove the mats. The person that left that comment got me all so riled up . . .I was fuming, but I tried not to let that person get the best of me. Of course I just had to respond to the email address he/she left to tell him/her of what I thought and to shove it up there you know what! ;-) I felt I shouldn’t have to justify my “case” . . . just like you, but we had to get it off our chest, di ba? Again, don’t let those JERKS get the best of you. Take care!

And yes, I leave your comment on knowing that you have only amplified your stupidity with it. You may think it is amusing to be annoying, but actually, it is just sad. And besides, since this blog has had 5 million page views since its inception, that only cost me 10 centavos a page to bring amusement to all of the other readers except you. EMILALVA you obviously refuse to accept that you are in fact unintelligent and unable to comprehend. If you know how to read whole sentences and paragraphs then you would most definitely understand how twisted your comments are.

Don’t be selective and don’t do skip reading. Go through everything and consult the dictionary if you get stumped.
……….another billion fleas from a thousand camels infest every part of your body……..

  125. filet minion says:

silly me actually thought that maybe emilalva was russian, which would partly explain his difficulty in understanding the contents of this mainly english blog. but then i saw his second comment. now he has no excuse for his incapability to comprehend anything

  126. Marghi says:

Just saw all of this for the first time….maybe its what she or he has been eating??? Or just usual Filipino crab mentality that we shouldn’t pay attention to and energize. Just want to congratulate those responsible for the book….what a crisp look. Am looking forward to actually holding it and reading it!!!! Its nice to see such a great, tangible effort at wanting to share such super information with others….something the EMILALVA’s of the world certainly won’t get. And of course, congratulations on the 3 years of Marketmanila….a shining example of what’s good about the Filipino!! More power and here’s to countless more!!

    To MM,

I say “go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence . . . .” to forgive is divine. . .

    Smile God loves You!

  128. Marketman says:

Ernesto, thanks for that, and coming from you, it is advice well spoken… :) My auto-delete key is the key to silence, in this case… thanks! Marghi, ever get strange restaurant customers like this person? filet minion, so restrained of you… :) jafores, he/she had to use the same bogus address to get in without it being screened first. miles, thanks! epi, the dude/dette will have to use Baygon as deodorant… :) Pebs, you got it. Hard to beat the first comment, if you ask me… CecileJ, we shall ignore as Ernesto suggests…

  133. ratacutie says:

Haha…this is getting to be really funny. ;p Emilalva (or whoever the creature really is) must be enjoying all the attention. Let’s not give the creature the satisfaction of our attention. Just ignore the creature (or insect? is there anything lower than an insect? feces perhaps? maybe that’s what emilalva is…). Tell “IT” Merry Christmas! Perhaps IT just lacks joy in ITS life. Kawawa naman. Kulang na nga sa pansin, low-life pa.

Since Christmas is fast approaching and as a year ender, Marketmanila should give this whatever an Award…The Head of Crap!

  136. Myra P. says:

In the blogosphere, people like Emilalva are called TROLLS. Time to banish this troll back to the underside of the dark, dank bridge from which she crawled out from.

I echo the sentiment: What have you done for others this year?

    Nov 14, 2007 | 12:30 pm

  137. peanutbeanma says:

ok that’s it. THAT IS IT. the gloves are off emilalva …tell me –
what have you done for others??? besides showing the world how offensive and uneducated you are ….uneducated since you are missing the point!!!!

why can’t you just do us all a favor and crawl into a very dark hole and wither away???? you will be soo doing your children a favor.

Who are you really? do you have the balls to reveal who you are? or is leaving comments that make no real sense the only sad way you can get your jollies?? dude – if thats the real reason – poor you. so put your money where your mouth is and have the guts to reveal who you really are instead of hiding behind your online name and spewing randomly.

on 2nd thought – don’t reveal nalang. i wouldnt want to be responsible for the hundreds of marketmanila readers who might just might smite you down ala God in the old testament.,…..hmmm – actually= not a bad idea. sige – i’ll make bawi again – reveal yourself na.

  138. sometime_lurker says:

Haha, I just read the 2nd comment (c/o the ‘balls’ contest).

    This is unbelievable.

Seriously E-dude, I feel that “comprehension” is too big of a word for you. Maybe reading materials, with smaller font size than that cereal box trivia you’re currently reading, could help.

Also, lay off on commenting, definitely not your thing.

  139. Melizza says:

It’s just so frustrating to see people like this Emilalva. If he had really been following this site for sometime now, I wonder what he has read so far. Because he obviously missed what this blog is all about. Does he even know how to read? Maybe he only looked at the pictures, with that 1Mb brain of his. If he says he has been visiting this site for sometime now, and still concluded erroneously, kawawa naman siya coz he still doesn’t get it.
Stop being so Preachy and go do something productive with your life Emilalva. When you try to bash the author of this site, you not only insult him, but undermine us, his readers as well. And from the look of it, we’re clearly waaay smarter than you.

Wow, EMILALVA, so you really did reply..

I’d like to lash out to you the anger I feel about people as DUMB as you are.. But wait a minute, you might understand because you are a freak-of-nature STUPID!! You are worse than the people I talk to EVERYDAY, at least (I’d like to think) they are trying to be functional..

mag-email ka na lang kay Pres. GMA at tanungin mo kung paano nya ginagastos tax mo. (that is kung nagbabayad k ng tax)

    hmph.

  147. Gabriel says:

Emilalva, please go to the December 26, 2006 post on the Christmas party that the Marketman family threw for their crew. If that doesn’t reveal to you that generosity and goodness are what motivate Marketman, then nothing will. Maybe his kindness doesn’t resonate in your spirit because yours is too closed and dark. Get help.

I can’t start hurling my own curses your way because once I do, I will have difficulty stopping. I have serious anger-management issues myself. But I really like the “grow like an onion” one Myra P sent your way. So in the words of Patrick Swayze — “Ditto.”

Marketman, thank you, thank you for your blog. I chanced upon the entry I mentioned above and reading it and looking at the pictures made me weep. Thank you for teaching us how to appreciate good food, the arts of cooking and baking, tasteful flower arrangement, how to expect and ask for value for hard-earned money, how to nurture family and friends, how to share, and so much more.

I am dreading the approach of the holidays because we just lost my Dad. I am trying very hard to get into the Christmas spirit. Your writing and the excitement and wonder you put into them are helping me. Thank you.

Hi MM…, to your question, it comes with the territory….currently trying to consistently keep the Rhonda Byrne mindset…positive thoughts, positive energy…and to Gabriel, you couldn’t have said it any better…the heartwarming thing is that the majority do see what MM and this blog is all about…

  149. leah says:

WOW!!! So, yeah, emilalva’s comment(s) was/were based on ignorance, and, maybe MM is beyond reproach — but the viciousness of some of the comments seem over the top. Please channel that anger on more important things. I’d like to believe that MM is doing just that for the less fortunate. Thanks Ernesto for the breath of fresh air (or is that Fr. Ernesto?)
