One Sentence Says it All…

tony1

As far as highpoints in the culinary side of my life, and the four year history of this blog, it just doesn’t get much better than this. I am too exhausted, and clearly crashing from an adrenaline high that started last Friday, but click on the jump to see why I am still floating on air with the biggest grin on my face…

  1. Good oink! Congratulations on a job well done! More than the pig, Im sure it was the love and passion which went through it that took the whole experience to the next level.

  2. I can’t wait to see this Episode. Some are saying that this episode will be shown Jan’09 and that’s too far from now. Anyway, Congratulations MM for the job well done!

  3. ANTHONY BOURDAIN coming to the Cebu eyeball to feature MARKETMAN!!!!! one sentence really says it all. This is really an honor to be featured by no less than the most eccentric and most true foodie among all those who has a show about food. I admire Bourdain so much for keeping it real in terms of trying dishes and for you MarketMan for doing the same.

Both of you can cook and eat the highest class and kind of food and still find the joy in eating the most simplest of dish which the so-called “common people” eat. A match made in heaven indeed!

Both idols in one setting and with lechon as the main course!!!

    I’m dying with envy here!=(

    Good luck MarketMan!=)

  4. Oh sorry got too excited to read the article… It’s not the Lechon Eyeball Bourdain is going to but you will tour him around CEBU for the “No Reservation” segment featuring the Philippines=)

    My bad!=)

I really wish I could be there to “stalk” you guys hehehe!=)

good job! can’t wait for your next write-up. so did he prepare the pig with the gang or did he just come in for the tasting? was his the ceremonial first prick on the skin? did he like the tuba or was he making for the spitoon? did he get a taste of some cebu chicharon? is he for real or is it all a facade? i’m sure the cebu eyeball is now going to turn into one hell of a celebration! cheers!!!

  9. YooHoo…. This is indeed a highlight of your blogging career and we will have the chance to celebrate it with you (and some pigs of course) on the fifteenth…

  10. wow, so happy for you! and so inggit!!!hehe!

Wish you more luck, man! And keep us posted!

  11. Congratulations!!!!!!!You deserve the honors. We want to read all about it when your spirits float back to earth.Don’t forget, we want a blow-by-blow account.

    WAY to go !!!!

  35. MM, hats off to you dude.

Tony is the one true inspiration for many people as he overcame a lot in his life and got the fame and happiness he deserve because he followed his passion and didn’t give a s@&*t about “Status” ( Sosyal).

BWAHAHAHAHAA. Really happy for you, and see you at the EB :)

  43. I did not get it right away, pero nung bumalik na ang utak ko (which sometimes is like taho), naku napapaiyak pa ako sa tuwa. Congrats talaga. Gagayahin tuloy kita, imbis na 1 pig lang ang ihahanda ko (as lechon) on my trip there this summer, gagawin kong dalawa, one will be prickchon, and the other the traditional. Tingnan ko rin kung alin ang mas maganda. Yon nga lang, wala akong Bourdain na kasama.

  44. Oh heavens! Thank God you were one of those who showed Tony Bourdain around town! (Congrats to Ivan as well!) For a while there, I was scared he might attach himself to pseudo food reviewers/bloggers like that whathisname from awesome planet (anyone who says Maurizio’s is the best Italian resto in Manila is nuts!) or that Jenny dispachadora who keeps saying Elbert’s Steak Room is the best coz she eats there for free. Hahaha

Kudos MM, you are the best. You are always an enjoyable read. And I know you know your food because you cook! You are a breath of fresh air in this hot mess of food bloggers who don’t even know the difference between roquefort and blue cheese. They are one and the same dispatchadora.

  45. What a great boost to you, your lechon crew, pinoy pride!!! The eyeball is going to be fantastic, eating, listening to AB stories, eating more lechon!
Congratulations to you and your crew for making it happen!

  46. Awesome! ‘Goes to show that you do thrive and deliver under pressure :). ‘Can’t wait to see the episode early next year.

I guess this mean that you can’t remain incognito anymore as the episode would most likely get uploaded to Youtube someday.

And as far as everyone of us getting the scoop on how it went with Bourdain, you’re probably in some sort of NDA with NR as they don’t like anyone pre-empting the show. That’s ok. Janary of 2009 is not that too far off.

Then again, you could probably throw us bits of morsels from behind the scenes taping? Haha.

  47. Hi Mr. MM!

This is so awesome! I am looking forward to this episode.
    Congratulations!

    Best Wishes :).

  48. MM…recent OPRAH episodes says she is on this PROTEIN diet…could she be possibly calling you soon? ….If I were in your shoes, I don’t know what “DANCE” I would do!!!!!

  49. did i miss something? were are the old posts that mentioned that THE anthony is coming over to cebu?!?!?! marketman, this is such a surprise! congrats to you!

  50. MarketMan – you rock!!! It was Anthony Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential” that piqued my curiosity in the culinary world, and it was your blog, that I merely stumbled upon a couple of years ago, that continues to inspire me on a daily basis on what to eat and what to cook! This will be a real treat to watch on the Travel Channel.

  51. I am in awe, JoeL!!!!!!!!! hoping the next post will be a long narrative of the event….PICTURES pls!!

  52. Heartiest congratulations!! I join all who have enjoyed your daily postings. You and Anthony Bourdain are a perfect match – so very proud of your achievement!!

    Pace e bene!
    marilen

  53. I think I missed something about the eyeball. But I am impressed! My jaw dropped upon reading the comment congratulating you on his coming.

Please post when the show will be aired.

    WOW! Somebody close my mouth…

  54. MM, you are the man! You and Anthony Bourdain in a segment in NR is definitely worth seeing!

I am so happy and thrilled that my favorite food blogger and my favorite TV personality/chef/traveler/legendary bad-ass got together and my dream of NR featuring the Philippines finally became a reality. Oh Lord, Christmas is indeed already here (for me at least! LOL)!

MM, I’m gonna say it again, you the man! =)

  55. MM, now we know “who”—PLEASE tell us “how, where, when” as ONLY YOU can elucidate…we know about the greatest pig ever–side dishes?? beverage?? have you recovered yet??

  56. Congrats MM!! Can’t wait for the detailed post on what happened in Cebu and to watch the show.

  57. Andrew Zimmern cannot.. DOES NOT .. hold a candle to Anthony Bourdain. His foodie episode on the Philippines left a lot to be desired. Can’t wait to catch you in Bourdain’s segment on the Philippines. It’s about time!!! Congratulations! What a coup for you. And the Philippines.

  58. Please tell us when the episode will air. I also like AB’s “Cooks Tour” especially the segment on San Sebastian! Congratulations!

  59. well,. . . who else could do a better food tour in Phil. than MarketMan himself. . . this would be a great episode, I know MM would make it great. . . wooohoo!!! MarketMan is the best choice for it. . . 4 thumbs up . . .including my feet hahaha

  60. MM and Bourdain you ROCK !!!!(Kasabay ng pagsubo sa isang malutong na balat ng lechon .YUMMM) para sa rock en roll Yoohooo!!!!always tapes his No Reservations show .

  61. MM Congratulations! I watched his show when he went to Singapore to try out local eateries. Loved his spirit. Bourdain is not squimish to try anything. Lucky to actually not only meet Tony but have him try your pig and tape a show about it. Better bring out some Lipitor, his cholesterol level is said to be on the high side. Hehehe. Again congratulations. I love his show and I love your blog!

  62. CONGRATULATIONS! Can’t wait to see the show. This is really awesome. I love reading your blog, its my everyday fix. And I love Bourdain’s show. And the two of you together? Great!!!What else can I ask for? Congrats again!

  63. congratulations MM! and i hope AB and this episode will help promote filipino food and culture unto the world stage!

teka… kelan ba next EB? :-)

  64. Wow!! What a thrill that must have been for YOU! It’s such a thrill for me to just read about it and know he not only loved the pig but thinks it was the best ever! Congratulations and thanks for giving us Filipinos more reason to be proud! :)

  65. HI MM!

Congrats on this awesome feat. I have been away and busy since the last time I said hi on your blog and am very happy to hear this very happy news from you.

I am just beginning to explore and find out more about Chef Tony. This comes just in time.

Were you also able to introduce our Adobo also? :)

CONGRATS to you, your crew, your family and to the lucky lucky people who will be attending the EB to partake of the BEST PIG… EVER!!! I hope that more people in the west will finally appreciate Filipino food with your contribution and put us on the gourmet map.

Hope my schedule will permit me to join the next EB. KUDOS again, MM!

  66. 5 big oinks!!! So this is where the lechon chronicles were headed. It speaks a lot of you MM in terms of preparation and passion. Congratulations to you and your crew for this wonderful achievement!!! I’m dying to know the details.

  67. WOW! ang galing mo MM! We are happy for you :)
When i first discovered this blog very interesting agad,
just like when i saw his show once.
Now,your paths have finally crossed over lechon. Congrats!

  68. Congratulations to you and the crew! I’m a big fan of Tony Bourdain’s show and your blog, and am very excited to see how the two combine. I’m imagining all sorts of lechon permutations. Can’t wait!

  69. Was it by any chance the “tusok-tusok” pig? All your efforts on the lechon chronicles paid off. Congratulations! You’re now a bigger celebrity than ever.

  70. Congrats, MM! Woo hoo!! We’re very, very proud of you. So is it “Joe L.” or “Joel”? Now we have a name to match w/ the face. But you will always be MM, no matter what. :)

  71. That’ll do, pig… that’ll do.
    BEST PIG…EVER

Now, there are two pig quotes on my list.

Thank you so much! And thank you for not blurring/cropping out the Joel bit! :)

And, OMG, crisp white shirt and a pair of well-fitting jeans (I’m assuming the jeans part, since I never see him wear the baggy kind hehe)! Be still my heart, AB!

  72. As a Cebuano, I must say I am so happy for you and for Cebu lechon. You and “the best pig ever” have just been hoisted on to the big stage, and you (and lechon) deserve the limelight. Was it your accuchon that won him over? Did you also introduce him to other lechon sources in Cebu? Once again, congratulations!

  73. Congratulations MM! Well deserved!

Do spill the beans…. which of your lechon experiments is “the best pig EVER”??? Will you now name it in honor of Anthony Bourdain? Will it the be the highlight of the Lechon EB? I am now super envious of your guests!

  74. Congratulations MM! BBC food shows the Anthony Bourdain show here in Saudi Arabia, can’t wait to see the episode. I like his down to earth attitude on food and life in general and he basically connects to my food/travel sort of appetite.

  75. Congratulations! Nobody could do it better than you. Lechoneros bantay sa daghang umaabot na order.

  76. Sometime_lurker; Am with you on your AB comments! He’s my kind of sexy!!!!! ;-)

MM, what else can I say after all the above commenters’ gushing and woohooohooo-ing? Good job! You did us proud and you totally deserve the honor!!!!!

  77. like the other commenters, i’m very intrigued if we’ll see your face on tv! i guess meeting anthony bourdain is good enough to sacrifice anonymity! :)

  78. MM — then end of anonymity and start of stardom?

we are so happy for you — and for our country. claude and you will certainly do us proud

  79. Hi everyone, as with “Taste Matters” on Channel News Asia last month, “World Cafe Asia” with Bobby Chinn early next year and “No Reservations” with Anthony Bourdain early next year, I do show my “face” and other body parts on the programmes… but as “Marketman” or by my first name only… :)

  80. That is way cool!

Hope that somewhere out there Mr Bourdain has a blog or similar and people are leaving comments like ‘Hey congrats – you got to meet MM’!

Speaks volumes for you that so many people have a sense of pride in what you have been doing this week.

    Great stuff.

  81. MM,

congrats! and we (the filipino people naks) are lucky indeed that you were the one who “landed” this gig.

  82. Ang galing Marketman! Congrats!!!! :) Best PIG EVER!!

My family and I will be waiting for that episode!

Like Bourdain, you’re a huge part of our family’s life. So, don’t be surprised if you accidentally bite your tongue or if you trip/stumble (around dinner time, which is 6-8pm), coz that means we’re talking about you and your blog! hahaha :)

  83. congrats!…can’t wait to see the show…..and i’m really really so inggit with the coming EB,….huhuhuhuhu….when oh when shall i be able to attend an EB :(

  84. MM showing his face and body parts……sounds “meaty”, witty and very chef like. Anyway, we’ll’ take you in any shape or form.

Congrats for hooking Anthony Bourdain and showing our pig in the best light.

  85. Aaaaaah, that is so great! I’m so so happy, tipong tears in my eyes :-) You give so much, MM, with your heart, no less, and I’m so glad you’re receiving the accolade you deserve.

  86. wow, you even have a show with Bobby Chinn, he is my favorite i like him a lot! again congratulations for showing the world the filipino food thru Discovery Travel and Living. Were now looking forward for 2009 !

  87. Its so great to know that our beloved MM is rubbing elbows with the great and famous! Congratulations! Can’t wait to see the show and the post your will be doing about it.

  88. Hi, MM.

Everyday until the day I knew you were going to “lechon eyeball” with Bourdain, I would look up the sky and wish for a long stretch of good weather. And I’d do it the moment I wake up! I remember that morning, I saw dark clouds over Makati all the way to Antipolo and I shivered, “Oh no, don’t rain on MarketMan’s parade!” I’m glad the skies were bluer in Cebu and the weather more cooperative. The rest is history. And so is the pig… best ever!

  89. Now do you have any weird foods for Andrew to taste? You are so damn lucky MarketMan! You are the Father of all bloggers. Congratulations!

  90. Wow MM! Taste Matters, World Cafe Asia, No Reservations! What’s next? Maybe next time you’re in NYC you get invited to After Hours w/ Daniel, a judge in Iron Chef, Throwdown w/ Bobby Flay for the Best Pig Ever!….Way to go MM!

  91. MM! if i were you, i’d faint… and the autograph! double wow!!! i’d probably die on the spot! hahaha! i was praying you’d make us proud, and from the looks of it, you did! hoorah!

  92. Congratulations MM! Cebuano lechon reigns supreme!!! I am so happy for you that you got this opportunity to show Tony Bourdain how wonderful Filipino food can be. He is one of the few tv chefs I respect.

Just like the rest…I want details! I can’t wait to see the episode!!!

  93. congrats, MM! YOU really deserve that! I’m so happy and proud of you I went talking about you the whole day – to my friends, my co-workers, my family. Hahahahaha! Yup, when you have the time, give us details, okay?

  94. I so want to meet Tony Bourdain. I cannot imagine how great you feel. How I wish someone would bring him to the Steak Room so I can feed him some really great meat–American meat like he’s never had it before. :)

Congrats and I genuinely am happy for you. You deserve the privilege anyway.

Now, to commenter MM fan, you’re just plain nasty. If I have it correctly, the ‘Jenny dispachadora’ you are referring is the fashion blogger. FYI, she has eaten at my resto three times already. Each time she ate there, she paid. I have never treated her to anything. You have your information wrong and I don’t even know why you need to mention her since she’s not a food blogger. It was actually very nice of her to include my Steak Room in her fashion/shopping blog.

Sorry about that, marketman. Now, when are you coming over to the Steak Room? I promise, I won’t treat you to dinner. I’ll have our good friend CL take care of that. haha.

    Cheers!

  95. Congratulations Market Man! We’re truly ecstatic and so proud of you here in Vancouver! (Betty, has the fan club been set up yet? :-))

  96. Congratulations Market Man! We’re truly ecstatic and so proud of you here in Vancouver! (Betty, has the fan club been set up yet? :-))

  97. MM….this is an open invitation….Best Pig EVER or even NO BEST PIG EVER!…if you have any intention of coming over to see the Olympics in 2010, PLEASE DROP US A NOTE!…Sayang, what will be held here is the WINTER OLYMPICS and not the SUMMER one. …if it was the summer Olympics, then it is LECHON WEATHER!!!

Hey ONie, you must have been out of circulation again! You missed it!!!!…just kidding!!! I posted an open invitation to those here in Vancouver…like I would bring some Kakanins and someone supply the locale since the house renos is taking REALLLLY slow…BUT I didn’t get any replies!!!

  98. Kakatuwa naman.Lucky for you to meet the famous foodie and lucky naman for Anthony to taste the best piggy, ever! Kudos to pinoy pride and cuisine! Well done, MM

  99. wow, this post gets an overwhelming responce, MM!! you are so LOVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also AB.

  100. Hey Natie…you on line? Drop me a line…e-mail:mymudcake@hotmail.com…Connie C and Cai(?) …too! …don’t know if you guys are still following the ensaymada thread…Connie and Cai…are you here in B.C.? I know Natie is somewhere in the East Coast…

Soooo proud of Marketman…..I adore Anthony Bourdain!

  105. Yup, that would be really nice to hold like a Meet and Greet party or Show and Tell!…hahaha!!! Ok, the Nanay in me is staring to take over…Anyway, let’s organize this thing for next summer? …For those coming from the East or even West, South or North …so we can have a local lechonan in someone’s backyard! maybe MM can surprise us with a visit?…

But, if you guys would like to meet for merienda, …who would like to volunteer their house…don’t know when my dear hubby will find the time to continue with the house reno. I do not want to be responsible for injuries incurred while eating…just like OMAROSA..remember? she was hit with a chunk of STYROFOAM on her head!!!

There’s nothing much to do here in the winter unless you guys would like to go skiing!

Meanwhile, Shane, I would love to give you a lesson on ensaymada 101. But MM has already posted his family’s ensaymada recipe with an Ensaymada Help-line hosted by SISTER!!!

  106. I admire Mr. Bourdain (i love to watch him in AFC)..i am looking forward for the success of this endeavor. God Bless MM!

  107. Your blog has international appeal just like AB’s No Reservations so hats off to you. I suspect your lechon chronicles were in preparation for AB’s show. They must have contacted you months before or was this a last minute invitation? Looking fwd to your detailed write-up and to the Philippine episode! Thanks for sharing your success!

  108. Wow!Bravo MM!I used to just lurk, ogle at the nice pics, enjoy the vivid prose, & drool over the yummy dishes featured here. But this merits a commendation. You really did great this time! Bourdain and MM in one show!Wouldn’t miss it for anything. You make us proud. It’s about time Filipino cuisine gets recognized world-wide.Kudos!

  109. hehe.. MM, you’d probably knock bobby flay out cold (judging from the throwdown episode on roast pork shoulder they had)!

  110. Read today in the newspapers about Bourdain’s Kapampangan food tour(behind the scenes), when will you post yours?Sige na, behind the scenes lang din so as not to preempt the show.Ang tagal pa kasi ng next year!I’m really so proud of you JoeL(aka MM)! ;)

  111. Good Job MM!!! You’ve made us all so proud and definitely a big plus for our local tourism. Good things really happen to good people like you. We’re not worthy..we’re not worthy… : )

  112. hi bett q., i will surely join the meet & greet / show and tell…. the townhouse community where we live has a clubhouse we can use, if you guys are open to it, i can have it reserved. our area is just 5 minutes from vancouver airport.

i seldom post my comments here but i regularly read the blog (morning and evening everyday!).

  113. Beth, in which newspaper did you read about Bourdain’s Kapampangan food tour? Is the article available online?

  114. philstar.com has 3 articles on bourdain 10/30/08; sorry don’t know how to link. just google “beyond balut with bourdain”…
it should point you to at least 2 articles (one by claude tayag himself)…there is another article “why claude?” by mary ann tayag as well.

  115. YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

    Marketman, you’re definitely THE MAN!!

    Woooohooooo!!!

(**all your admirers now execute a huge ‘wave’ with their arms in sync**)

  116. OK, guys…I am a stay-at-home mom…so I’m up for this…any day , any time…Onie, Pinky, Keiko, ProteinShake …
any one else? ..what do you say, mga Mrs…merienda before Christmas holidays or before the blizzard comes! Dad volunteered the use of their clubhouse on their townhome complex in Richmond…

Then next summer…let’s do a lechonan for everyone wishing to come. I will ask my brother to cook it for me in his backyard and transport it to say a GVRD park?…depending on how many people want to come! It would be better if we canhave it in someone’s house so we can have an all day sosyalan(?) and a hands on demo on whatever you guys would like to learn!!!…Shane wants ensaymada 101 and Onie wants Prawn wontons …anything else?

Dad: even if no one is able to go, I would still like to meet you. …I will bring some ensaymadas, Kakanin and you supply the hot chocolate or Chai tea!…soounds good?

  118. MM,

  120. Thanks Beth & flip4ever for the info.

Nainggit naman ako kina bettyq! Makalipat nga sa Canada…or should we set up a Northern CA Marketfans chapter?

  121. hi betty q, dad & other vancouver-based readers, am interested to meet and share/learn some cooking tips and recipes. i have yet to decide what kakanin to bring…

  122. Congrats, MM! Job well done! I can’t think of a better foodie ambassador of Filipino food!

  123. I have been an avid fan of your site for a couple of years now but i haven’t posted a comment until now….

    Wow! getting that from bourdain…

    Wow!

  124. Late to the comment party…

This just shows who really is “in the know” when it comes to Filipino food. Awesome job.

  125. I hope I do get to taste this “pig” soon! One of my best friends from high school, Gourdo’s Charlene, came over to visit me a couple of months ago and when I asked her if she was familiar with your blog, she fairly raved about your cooking (Some of her friends have tasted your cooking). Hopefully, I’ll get to taste your yummy lechon, too, in the future.

  126. Can’t wait for the episode to air. Been watching Season 2 on DVD and saw the Bali episode. Tough competition methinks but I believe PH will prevail!

  127. Hi MM!! I am back from my maternity hiatus! I was too busy looking after my wee one that I didn’t have time to read you. However, now that I am back, I am totally, absolutely psyched that Anthony Bourdain came to the Philippines and had you as his guide on Filipino cuisine.

I am so looking forward to watching this episode. I will let you know how everything comes out!!

  128. I just finished watching the Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations Philippines episode and it was fantastic! He had so many nice things to say about all the food he ate throughout his visit. The lechon looked amazing! I hope this episode helps introduce Filipino food to a wider audience. Congratulations!

  129. Hubby and I really like you in the No Reservations with Anthony!! Your answers to Anthony’s questions, like the one in the market “suki”, was very good! But the best for us, was your answer to Anthony’s question, Why our cuisine is not as pronounced like the other Asian countries. You nailed it here. My hubby kept on saying..magaling, magaling! Tama, tama..because we really do adapt pretty well, any situation, any place..saang sulok mo man dalhin ang Pilipino. They chose the right person to be with Anthony at the end of the show! Basta, ang galing-galing mo! Your explanations, answers were very informative and tama! You nailed it! Saludo to you!!

  130. When I first got wind that Anthony Bourdain was coming I was worried that he will be shown the wrong food….But it was really a blessing you and Claude were the ones that showed him the way…… It was just the right dishes and you guys really did a heck of a nice job for Pilipino food

  131. i know this is late in the day – i saw this episode when it first came out – but i watched it again just now on youtube on a whim. and i REGRET it – because i’m 25 weeks pregnant, it’s 4am – and i want LECHON now. waaaaah!
