Vanda Orchids

Vandas were amongst my mom’s favorite type of orchids. They come in such vibrants shades and hues, and varying sizes of blooms. They are quite ebullient. Vandas are near the peak of their blooming season right now, and even provincial markets/sources in Cebu have them in abundance. They range in price from PHP15 for a whole stem recently purchased in the flower markets of Cebu, to PHP15 PER BLOOM for the ones in these photos, from Waling-Waling, at their wholesale outlet in the Manila Seedling Bank.

I was amazed by the size of these blooms and the colors they had in stock. I had no need for them, so simply asked permission to photograph them rather than buying them…

The colors of these vandas were intense…

…and while a lot of reference materials refer to their scent (unusual for most orchids, as only a few varieties I think have a strong fragrance)… I didn’t necessarily get much of a whiff of anything, but then again these had already been refrigerated.

Arranged en masse, these vandas can make some rather STUNNING arrangements.

  4. Beautiful vandas….and heart warming memories of my late grandmother…she had a greenhouse and pots and pots of vandas that flower shops in the 70’s would buy from her per flower….Her love for orchids was the influence for my mom opening her flower shop….and then many years after, I opened mine too….Thank you, MM for putting a smile on my face and making me remember my dear lola….

  5. Resplendent colors and truly exotic veining and markings. Any one of the plants bearing these spectacular blossoms can stop you in your tracts if you happen to come across one in full bloom in a rainforest floor. But of course they have all now vanished from their natural habitat.

  6. If I remember right, I think a Vanda from the Philippines, similar to the blue one you have up there, won best in show in the Montreal flower expo a few years back.

  8. Melvin, try the Manila Seedling Bank on Quezon Avenue in Quezon City, they have dozens of shops with a fairly broad selection. Prices are fair for a city retail location.
