Zubuchon Summer Outing Part I : The Crew

Organizing a summer outing on a spur of the moment (less than 4 days) is not an easy task. But the crew did it, and did it brilliantly. Executed with military precision, only their chief crew member, was uncharacteristically late, as I was almost certain they wouldn’t all be at the docks on time. Instead, some 80+ folks and lots of paraphernalia were loaded onto three huge bancas docked in Mactan, exactly at 7am, as previously agreed. How’s that for being prompt and organized. :) We got under way on smooth seas and what looked like a potentially iffy day weather wise. Some momentary breaks in the clouds provided sunshine, while looming rainstorms on the horizon threatened gloom… About 20 minutes from the docks, J, our manager, decided to have an impromptu pictorial on the prow? of the banca, so everyone got their two shots on my SLR, some to stunning results… My opening shot above is E, an accountant and loyal crew member of 17 years that started off in a family company and now works at Zubuchon. She definitely wins the prize for best photo, don’t you think? :)

Chef J, who runs our commissary, is a senior citizen with the energy of a teenager!

T, ramp-worthy, though slightly nervous about the setting, in the same way one would be walking in 5 inch heels I imagine, as the boat was running and bobbing up and down… so there was a slight risk of losing someone overboard…

S & E, two of our supervisors, with E having served as a waiter in our own home in Manila for 12+ years, until we brought him to Cebu to train our dining crew, to wonderful results. They are a couple.

J, our inventory go-to person, tough as nails, a bubble of joy, and a wonderful photo…

A, my trusted COS (Chief of Stuff) who has put up with me for 16 years, and was around when the Teen was just brought back from the hospital for the first time…

A, who knows how to strike a pose, and does retail sales for us in the airport.

Two of three bancas disgorging the crew…

…some of the gentlemen…

…some of the ladies…

And most of the 80+ crew who joined us that day at the beach. Photo includes J, our General Manager in white sitting up front. I could have posted a stunningly outrageous photo of her with crew member but I understand she would kill me if I did that. :)

The crew 8 hours later on roughly the same spot, and mostly inebriated.

Of course, chief crew member, yours truly, Marketman before I suffered first degree burns from overexposure to the sun. A second post on the food and games, next.

  3. MM, you’re not only a good manager but also a good-hearted person who cares for his people.

More blessings to you and your family!

  4. Nice shots! Do you have a restaurant in Manila, MM? You mentioned E has been with you for the past 12+ years starting as a waiter in your home in Manila.

  5. Nice to see you all having a great time!! Of course I recognize J, who organized the very first Marketmanila Zubufeast in your outdoor deck area for me and my family last year!! You look great in your summer outfit and I congratulate you for staying committed to being healthy and true to form as James Bond !!! :) :) :)

Can you share which beach is this? I hope to go back to Cebu this summer with my family and I will definitely go to eat at your restos! :)

  6. Hehe, nice shorts!

I noticed that in the 2nd group picture there was a signboard behind you. I hope it didn’t read ‘Warning: Shark infested waters’

  7. It must have been a fun outing! Where in Cebu did you go? The beaches around Mactan are not good. It must be farther away?

  8. You treat your people well– it reflects in their happy faces.
    Nice shorts, too!

  9. Can’t help but notice the really nice shorts the men are wearing esp. yours and Chef J’s!!!!…love those shorts!!!!!!

But where is Mrs. MM…is she the one taking the pictures?

  10. thanks for giving us someone to look up to, MM. ;) congratulations on such good people, and what looks like a fantastic getaway! :)

  11. Love it! I am so happy to see all of you having a great time! More power to the Zubuchon family.

  12. If only everyone who owned a business treated their crew the way you do, especially in the Philippines…then there would be happy, loyal, and hardworking workers all around. You get what you give and that’s why you’re surrounded with good spirits, wealth, and happiness.

Much success to you, MM. Can’t wait to go to Cebu, when I visit PI, to seek your restaurant.

  13. really nice shorts! your crew are lucky to have you as their chief…and i like your COS tag btw, chief of stuff…hehe

  14. Wonderful pictures! You are truly a good man. God Bless. I would like to know where this beach is. Thanks

  15. Your crew must really love you!!! Can i join your wonderful team. Im so jealous!!!!

  16. How fun! Great to put faces to “the crew” who you mention on your posts frequently and what a morale booster for “the crew” who put out the best lechon daily…still can’t wait to try it one day!

  17. It looks like everyone had a good time. It interesting to note that only you MM and COS dared to venture out farther on the banco prow…up until the metal rod. Talk about posturing!! Easy to spot the leader of the pack. You’re a good leader that’s why you have even better followers. Can’t wait for the food pics.

  18. And that, ladies and gents, is why it’s more fun in the Philippines ;-) ‘Nuff said.

  19. I have been to plenty of company outings, but none looked as much fun as this one. You have a great crew and I believe they have a kind and generous leader =)

  20. Super like!!! In fact, I love this! <3 <3 <3 You are all very happy and having so much fun! You are an ideal boss, MM. Kudos to you and your wonderful blog! We do appreciate you so much! God bless your kind heart, YOU, and your family!

  21. Thank you for sharing, MM, all the fun and games and camaraderie!! Just the best way to show thanks and appreciation!!! This reminds me of how Oprah also gathered her ‘crew’ in past years and treated them to Hawaii and Australia – to say thank you.
God bless all your endeavors, you have a generous and good heart!!

  22. Nice shots, MM. The crew are so lucky to have you. And yes, E the accountant deserves the prize for best shot. :)

BTW, loved your shorts. Nice pop of color against the gloomy skies. :)

  23. Luuvvv the nyorts!!

Agree with AM. Employees won’t stick around that long if they’re not happy with their employer. Your crew is an attractive bunch!

  24. great shots, and good-looking crew! as for you MM, Daniel Craig had better get cracking! ;-)

  25. oh what fun you and your crew had! how wonderful! i hope you recover from your sunburn fast; and hope it wasn’t sun poisoning.

  26. Thanks Bossing MM! It’s my first time to have a summer outing with my co workers. I really enjoyed it. Mr. COS nice shot and nice muscle. Mam E you look very, very happy in your pose it doesn’t look your nervous at that time.

MORE POWER TO YOU AND ZUBUCHON!

  27. good job, it’s rare for a company to care for it’s employees, you set a good example on how an employer can retain top talent. More continued success for Zubuchon!

  28. I see familiar faces :)

It’s good to see a hard-working team taking a break. Part 2 looked like fun!

  29. Profitability does not just come in numbers, it’s also in loyalty, a sense of belonging, camaraderie, and commitment. This guarantees your being in the long haul together. Post this ten years down the line, and it would still be the same people!

  30. Love the shorts, MM! Wow, that is one fun company outing. I agree, you are a good man, MM. :)

  31. Can’t help but notice the fun and playful shorts – love it! I must admit though that it’s quite a departure from the reserved and dignified, that is, the Mr. Market Manila ;-)

    You rock, MM!

  32. So nice to see the core group of the Marketmanila/Zubuchon family – looks liek you all had a great time. Takes a good man to build a team and inspire loyalty. :)

  33. It’s nice to know that you also take care of your crew members! Most of them have been with you/your family for a long period of time, so really they are like families to you! I’m sure you all had a fantastic time, and I bet they can’t wait for your next summer outing! Glad to have meet the people behind “zubu foods inc”!
