A Few Changes for Added Security…

Regular visitors to marketmanila.com may have noticed that the location of the commenters has disappeared. It seems that the “plug-in” that allowed that feature has been “unsupported” for several years, and as such, became susceptible to being an area where “viruses” or other “bad stuff” could be lodged. As soon as we figured that out, we disabled the feature, and went back into the archives and removed over 110,000 locations that were posted along with their comments. This took a day or so and the site slowed down on purpose during that period. K, our technical guy, has also cleaned up lots of other things, so the site should be clean for now. If you continue to experience warnings from your virus checkers, please clear your caches and cookies and I hope you are no longer bothered with these notices. My apologies for any inconvenience caused over the last few weeks, but it’s the work of twerps, nothing we wished on ourselves or you, the readers. It is unfortunate that we have had to remove the locational markers, as I enjoyed reading a comment with an idea of where the commenter was based… Many thanks for visiting marketmanila.com!

  1. My location and those of some others didnt show the correct location anyway. I think just having the location indicated next to your name/handle should also do the job. I’m also curious to know where the particular commenter was from, specially since your blog has a worldwide audience.

  2. Joseph, yes, the location shown in the location of your IP, so for many people, they may be in Manila but the IP they or their company uses is in China, Singapore, the U.S., etc. So it was only about 80% accurate… Yes, if readers can be bothered, writing your location every once in a while beside your name will give your stated location… thanks.

  3. Divine G.(USA) it’s just like Miss Universe where you introduce yourself plus your country. I also like to know where the commenter is from….but if it is safer not to put where it is coming from then do what is safe.

  4. When I accidentally Found your site 3 years ago, i was googling Phil fruits,MM appears , I was So HAPPY. Read everything about local fruits!I was a lurker for a long time..Finally i tried to say “something” but it wont take my normal name, I am a night person an insomniac sometimes.. i got to think of a name .. it was 3am, i live in this area..and it works:)..luckily..never had any so far with the virus. Thanks for taking care of your site for I, look forward every night or sometimes days on your wonderful site!

  5. Glad to hear that the problem with the site is gonna be fixed. My workaround while the issue was still happening was to access the site via http://www.marketmanila.com/archives instead and just look for the latest post at the bottom. The issue usually happens when I go directly to the home page.

  6. Thanks for being vigilant, MM. Being safe is good not only for your site but also for your thousands of readers as well.

  7. I find that when the location is entered in the “Name” box, it stays there and so I dont need to reenter it each time i post a comment. If I may add another suggestion, enter your city not just the country.

  8. I opened you site in my office computer about 3 weeks ago and got a warning that it’s not a safe site to browse. I then got an email from our sysadmin guy telling me to be careful when going to sites that might case a virus to infect the office network. I don’t open the site now in the office but just when I’m home. I hope this problem is now fixed.

  9. You will always find me in Dubai anyway, whether my “location” said Canada where our server is! Thanks MM.

  10. I USE MANILA BECAUSE I LOVE MANILA. EVEN WHEN I’M ELSEWHERE, IT’LL BE MANILA …

BTW, I WATCHED ‘PINOY FOODIE’ AND ‘ZUBUCHON’ WAS FEATURED. IF YOU OPEN A BRANCH IN MANILA, YOU WILL DEFINITELY RECEIVE AN AVALANCHE OF FASCINATING COMMENTS AND NOT JUST, “APRUB!”

  11. So that’s why MM site was suddenly blocked in my workplace. Hopefully i will be able to access as that’s where I do my copying, pasting and saving during my breaktimes. There’s always something new to learn in your site. Thanks MM!!

  12. Was I alarmed when I was redirected to a picture of a movie star sitting on the “throne” doing her business and at another time Paris Hilton taking off her bra! Oh my the things we are exposed to, just to read your blog! Its worth it though and my apps just cleaned those out. It’s a shame that these hackers dont put their talent to better use.

  13. hayyy! Thank you for fixing the problem. I was already thinking of other alternatives how to get my marketmanila fix…

  14. I just cleared my cookie and history just now as I was having the same problem as “pinkytab (USA)”. Why can’t those hackers leave us alone. Thanks for resolving the problem MM. I love your site.

  15. Thank you, Sir, for addressing the problem. I would rather look at pictures of food than Paris Hilton.

  16. I still am redirected to this Paris Hilton pics every now and then. Not to techy on pc MM. This is the first time in a few weeks of attempt that I got in your homepage.
