Extreme Close Ups…

Care to hazard a guess?

We had a small dinner for family and friends last night, and this was one of the desserts served. Early morning Sunday, I was playing with a macro lens trying to take some extreme (at least for me) close-up photos on a manual setting (yup, auto turned off, a major major thing) and I am thrilled with some of the handheld (too lazy to set-up tripod as I wanted to eat the subject) results. And for those of you asking, during my recent trip to Hong Kong, I got a Canon G12 for me to take “everyday, everywhere photos” and I also got a Canon EOS600D with an extra macro lens for close-up photos. Please, don’t ask me more than that, I can barely figure out how to use my cell phone for goodness sakes… :)

But this dessert was wonderful. Totally based on a western recipe and methods, but using some of our finest home grown ingredients. The results? A version of it would probably make it into that mythical Marketman cookbook if I ever got around to writing it. I’ve had two slices with a large cup of tea before 9 a.m. on a lazy Sunday morning…

I hate to be a tease, but you’ll have to wait until I post the recipe soon. In the meantime, you can always hazard a guess… :)

  1. Rainer cherries upside down cake!

I didn’t look and read the article, because you usually want us to guess before continuing to read…anyway, on second thoughts after reading and looking at your close up pics, I think it’s egg pie with dayap.

  2. The pie looks like a lime flavoured creme brulee with crumbly pastry crust? I’ve been making creme brulee for the past two weeks and blow-torching as we eat -my baby’s new fave after meal treat.

  3. Thinking this was Key Lime Pie but then again it’s like sugar crusted on top. Maybe crembrulee pie? If there’s such a thing hehe

  4. A citrus egg custard pie of sorts? The toppings look like they could be candied dayap or kalamansi rinds, though I’d think kalamansi since they’re small. :P

  5. I think it’s a dayap pie with creme brulee top. BTW, i think I saw you sa Jr. MasterChef Pinoy Edition primer. Was it you? hehe

  6. a creme brulee tart with some of your rainier cherries, the pastry cream flavored and garnished with candied dayap rind.

  7. hmmmmm — based on a western recipe and methods…… i think it’s new york cheesecake using some of our local cheeses, crust of lady fingers/broas and dayap for the citrus kick =)

i voted for the ‘marketman cookbook’ in the poll before — so i hope it doesn’t remain mythical for long =)

  8. because you just came from a hk trip, i would guess that is an egg pie or egg tart with dayap

  9. looks like a cross between lime custard pie and a cheesecake to me! salivating over the idea of that anyway… :)

  10. i read somewhere that you recently have a stash of dayap. so it is key lime. i’ll go with the rest, maybe some kind of flan/custard.

  11. If one only looks at the top pic, I can see a chameleon as Jenn Chon suggests and the indentations on the tart mould do look like shadows of strawberries… and that’s probably what a house fly fast approaching landing sees with its compound eyes.
