Feeding Program Update

Donations to the marketmanila.com feeding program are still trickling in. Please check for specific transfers/remittances here. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated by the students we are helping at the Banawa Elementary School. It is appropriate that I share with you this recent development which is rather positive. A couple of months ago, the Banawa Elementary School was asked to field a contingent to the annual Sinulog Festival to be celebrated in full force this Sunday. Public schools from around Cebu consider it a huge honor to be invited, but unfortunately many schools turn the invitation down due to the cost of fielding such a team. I was shocked to find out that expenses for choreographers, costumes, band equipment, etc. can run into the hundreds of thousands of pesos. And when I asked what the return was, besides the pride of participating in the event, it seems the top prizes are millions in prize money for the winning school!

At any rate, Marketman’s Family & Crew made a modest contribution to their fund raising efforts and they practiced like mad over the past few months. I am told that they made it into the TOP 10 CITY teams (see this Cebu-based blog for some idea what the teams are like) and as such, will be one of the chosen few that will participate in the dancing for the full length of the parade this weekend. This is the first time they have ever done this, and I want to congratulate them on making it to the group of city finalists, as it were. There are several provincial teams from towns all over the island so it isn’t an easy competition to win. So now we need the collective good wishes of the whole marketmanila.com family in wishing the team from the Banawa Elementary School all the best this weekend. Who knows, one of the kids you all helped to feed may be a part of this winning team. But even if they don’t land a top prize, I am so happy they managed to get this far! Congratulations and good luck!!!

  1. Much success on their efforts and may they win the grand prize. Good luck students and teachers!

  2. goodluck to all the students and faculties who will be helping in this activity. I just hope that it will not rain so that there will be a nice parade and presentation. Thanks MM for the update.

  3. Wish all the participating teams best of luck. I’m partial though to Banawa Elementary School Team. If Banawa Elementary School have gone this far then in my humble opinion they are one leg behind in winning. I can see them taking home the trophy in my tarot cards! This is the best venue for these young kids to bring out the most of their musical, dancing and designing talents. Like a stepping stone to Dance with the Stars! Look at our very own Arnel Pineda of the band Journey. He is one of the highest paid vocalists and was discovered through You Tube. I was at their concert in Summer of 2008 which was a smashing success and not only in revenue but the turned out as well and the momentum at the concert itself.

  4. Way to go!!! Good luck and have fun! I remember being part of a team competing with diff schools, and once you hear them call out your school as the biG winner it’s just so magical, so much screamming, smiling, tears of joy falling down our cheeks it’s unbeilivable! I’m so happy for those kids!

  5. Good luck to the Banawa group!! May the Senor Santo Nino guide you all to win the coveted prize!! Praying for you…

  6. Thanks everyone for your good wishes! I didn’t realize how “competitive” this sinulog thing is… apparently it’s a very big deal and there are particular schools that are always so well funded and considered the annual favorites… so here’s to the underdogs! :)

  7. goodluck to the Banawa Elem School!!! our best wishes to them, also, i am praying for a fine weather that day so that the festival will be truly a success no matter who the winner is.

  8. `I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank BETTYQ for being such a wonderful person. She is soooo giving..sooo generous even to strangers like me. I met her here at the “MARKET”. Anyway,I offered to buy some of her ensaymada moulds but she said she didn’t want my money and instead asked me to give 5 dollars to the feeding program. That was nice of her! She mailed 4 dozens off to me but didn’t want me to pay her back the $16.00 postage fee. So I just added that to the amount and sent it to Belen Disqidado at Banawan Elem. School. Total amount I sent was 26 dollars and but is actually from BettyQ. Thank you very much Betty!! Thank you very much Mr. MM!!

  9. Will keep the Banawa Elementary School team in my prayers! At the very least, the will enjoy the experience!

  10. Thank you, Betty Q, on behalf of my sister Victoria from Florida. She received the ensaimada moulds you sent her. She asked me to deposit her donation to MM’s feeding program in your name. Sorry I’ve been pretty busy but I promise I will get around to it very soon. You are such a giving person, you generously share your recipes, expertise and your moulds to people you don’t even know. Mabuhay ka, Betty Q! Maraming maraming salamat!! Thank you too, MM.

  11. I will cheer for Banawa and my hometown’s contingent, Carcar. I hope both will win this Sunday!!

  12. I am one of the many recipients of Ms. Bettyq’s generosity. I received the moulds, ube flavouring, and dried oysters. And of course, her excellent recipes. I wanted to publicly thank her too thru Mr. MM’s site. Maraming Salamat Betty. I can only dream of flying to your place sometime in the future and give you a warm hug.

  14. Dear Marketman,
Congratulations on your feeding program. I would like to give you a copy of the recipe book Good Food Book by the Lay Affiliates of the Good Shepherd. The book is not gloosy, nor has it food styled photos. But the recipes have stories connected with Good Shepherd and the affiliates. I live in Baguio. Where can I send it to you by DHL? The book sale supports a feeding program and a day care in Bagong Silangan near the Payatas dump site in Quezon City.

  15. hi mr.marketman,

You have a big heart. Congratulations to the success of all your feeding programs. I work as a chef and can I contribute by cooking for you for free to this feeding programs? I love children. And I always wanted to help and make them happy especially those children who are in need of these kind of charities.Thank you.
