JB to inspire JB…

Screen Shot 2015-08-16 at 5.22.41 PM

It’s my 51st birthday today. I consider it a major achievement to have made it to 50, so anything beyond that is really a bonus. But when I hit 50 last year, I think I mentally let go, and I am now my heaviest ever, and I feel it. The past week has been filled with dread, alternating between a purposeful trip to Vicky Bello for liposuction (not!) and a promise to renew my efforts to naturally shave off the extra weight. I am also finally scheduled for a sleep apnea test which I suspect I will fail, and I don’t look forward to sleeping with a breathing contraption strapped on every night. It’s also the height of my annual hay fever/bronchial ailment/adult onset asthma so that has me drugged up. Add to that a cardiologist harping about this or that test, and well, it’s downright depressing…

But I REFUSE to stay down. James Bond to the rescue! I WANT that charcoal grey mock turtleneck from N. Peal that James Bond is wearing in the promo photo teaser of the latest Bond film out this November! And I fully acknowledge I am currently in no shape to wear it well. Think charcoal grey cashmere and silk stuffed chorizo, not a pleasant sight. So I am using JB to inspire me and I am publicly announcing (apparently one is far more committed to a public announcement) a target of shaving off 25 pounds by the time the movie is in theaters in New York this November, or I CAN’T WATCH IT. That gives me just under 3 months to reach that goal. And while I don’t think I would spend 199 pounds sterling for the sweater even if I am successful with the weight loss (will look for a similar piece at Uniqlo or H&M for a fraction of the cost), I might just reward myself with a new pair of Tom Ford’s Bond sunglasses instead. And that’s because I just can’t afford/justify one of the 7,007 limited edition Omega’s with NATO strap on offer soon (which will be snapped up by collectors in a few days time). My “James Bond Diet” starts tomorrow. Wish me luck. That’s what I really need for my 51st birthday!

If I am successful, I promise a photo in New York where we are headed for Thanksgiving 2015. :)

P.S. Daniel Craig is four years younger than me, but let’s face it, with a personal trainer and dietician by his side practically 24/7 in the four months run-up to filming AND his getting paid some USD20 million or so for SPECTRE, his motivations are significantly better than mine. According to the Daily Telegraph, Craig was paid just under 2 million pounds for Casino Royale, 4.4 million pounds for Quantum of Solace, 10.7 million pounds for Skyfall (which grossed 1.1 billion at the box office, the highest for a Bond film EVER), and got 31 million pounds for Spectre and whatever the next film is going to be called…

  14. Happy birthday MM! If there is anyone who can find a way to make diet meals more enticing, it is you. More content in this context wouldn’t be so bad–but I hope you still sneak in a pork post or two. :)

  15. Go go go MM! You can do it! And happy happy birthday! Looking forward to more birthdays, celebrations, travels and blogging. Wishing and praying for your good health.

  16. Happy Birthday, MM!!! May your birthday and all your tomorrows be blessed with everything good in life….good luck with your JB diet :-)

  17. Happy Birthday MM. God bless you in your weigh reduction efforts!

It would probably be helpful if you watch “That Sugar Film”, a pretty good eye opener for me about how sugar affects our body . Cutting sugar made me loose around 10 pounds in a month(w/ exercise) without really reducing the amount of foods I ate.

  18. Happy Birthday and I hope you meet your goal soon. Skip sugar but not pork :) Worked for me.

  19. Happy happy birthday! Easy on the diet. Hungry people are most of the time cranky and unpleasant to be around :-)

  20. Thank you all for these kind birthday greetings! It’s nice to see names from years ago, it amazes me that you still drop in to see what’s on the blog! Zerho, my diets are always no sugar, almost no salt, no carb. It works for the most part, but as Tina mentions, I can get cranky in the initial stages, so aspiring fishpan awardees need to steer clear…

  21. Happy Bday Dear MM!
    Good luck on your diet.
looking forward to seeing you minus the pounds (Amen!) and the JB film this November!
Thanks for sharing with us your life’s wonderful journeys.

  22. Sounds like that diet can make you light headed and giddy, but carry on MM. Wishing you a trimmer you by Thanksgiving. And remember, it’s okay to have a cheat day:)) every now and then. Happy birthday!

  23. I’m doing LCHF (low carb high fat) myself (not for weight loss but to optimize my blood sugar and blood pressure). The proponents say don’t limit your salt (especially if you’re using natural sea salt). In fact if you’re not feeling well in the initial stages (called Atkins flu), drinking broth with salt helps because a low carb is naturally diuretic. Check out Jeff Volek and Stephen Phinney’s The Art and Science of Low Carb Living.

  24. I bet Daniel Craig has had a few nips and tucks here and there..

Happy happy birthday, MM!!! Enjoy the bonus years!

  25. Happy birthday!! Great post from the birthday celebrant – taking stock of where one stands at the half way mark. Not to worry MM, you will meet your goal and then some. Muy joven ka pa, hijo.

  26. Happy Birthday, good-luck, stay inspired, keep your eye on the prize even if it’s not the mock turtleneck, the Omega or the Tom Ford glasses. Instead, just think of how much turkey you can stuff yourself on Turkey Day once you lose 25 pounds. :-)

PS – Make sure you stop by H&M or Uniqlo before stuffing yourself… not after!

  27. I’ve always liked the way Steve McQueen rocked the blue turtleneck and blazer in Bullitt myself…Happy Birthday Double M.

  28. Belated happy birthday and good luck, MM. Funny, I was looking for your adobo recipe and the date was August 2006. Lo and behold you mentioned Ninoy Aquino’s assassination and you also mentioned it was a day after your 19th birthday. So here I am in the present day greeting you. Trying to lose a few pounds myself. Gee, since I repatriated gained a few pounds.
BTW. I might be somewhere close to NYC come Thanksgiving. Our paths might cross.

  29. I just watched the segment of “eats more fun in the Philippines” featuring Zubuchon. It’s so cute how you speak in Tagalog :)

  30. Happy Birthday MM..aka JB..what a way to go,she’d those pounds…for you always been successful on your goal before!..my second greetings .

  31. Happy Birthday MM… Hope you’ll have a very nice day with your family and friends..

  32. Happy Birthday Marketman! May you always post your passions so that we may enjoy them as well.

  33. Happy birthday, MM!

Have you considered buteyko for your sleep apnea? It worked for a colleague, who has given up his C-PAP machine.

  34. Belated happy 51st MM. Wishing you more birthdays to share and enjoy with your loved ones and market manila family.

  35. Belated Happy Birthday, Mr. MM!! :D

Yeah, I know how you feel Mr. MM. Captain America (Chris Evans) and I are born in the same generation. :(

Good luck on the diet! GO!! GO!! GO!! Munch that WASA cracker!! :D

  36. Go for it MM! I was able to shave off around 16 kilos of fat from 90kgs down to 74kgs, gym, diet control no extra rice more veggies, then 5 kilometer jog. phew!

  37. Belated birthday greetings MM! Good luck on your quest…although I know you have the determination to do it! I really need to do something like this too, hmmm…what can be my motivation? Although I wouldn’t mind Daniel Craig too…you can have the sweater and I can have the rest of him! :)

  38. Belated happy birthday po MM! May you have many
    more birthdays to celebrate!
Here’s cheering you to your weight loss goal!
Which by the way have inspired me too
and hope I can lose even just half of your goal :).

  39. Belated Happy Birthday MM! I just got back from Tokyo and ate Pierre Herme macarons 4 out of the 6 days I was there. I wouldn’t have known about them if it weren’t for your macaron chronicles. Thanks MM! Goodluck to the both of us on our diets!

  40. A very belated happy birthday greeting from Kenya MM. Great fitspiration you have there, so see you at the Spectre premiere then!!!

  41. Happy Birthday, MM! I saw a sneak peak of the movie Spectre and honestly, you were the first person that came to my mind! Can you share your diet plan? Might as well try to do this with you :-)

  42. Cynthia, I am doing the same diet from years ago… basically, no carbs except wasa crackers, no salt, no sugar, lots of water, small servings of protein, lots and lots of vegetables and greens, minimal fruit, lots of black tea, I gave up more than half by Diet Coke intake (should give it all up), and a bit more physical activity thrown in. I lost 6 pounds in my first 10 days or so. Not bad, but not as good as the first time I did the diet. I will say I have cheated several times though.

  43. Belated Happy Birthday MM! It’s been a while. I miss all your lovely posts especially about Paris. It’s my favorite city after New York (or maybe the other way around).
I wish you all the best cure for your depressing thoughts on how to keep trim and stay healthy! It’s a gigantic task ahead but it’s doable and you’ve done it before and you have the motivation, Mr. JB! Just do it!
My husband is into 5:2 diet and he loves it and I’m into 6:1 whenever I see that my muffin waist is overflowing : ))
    Take care!
