Marketman on TV, Hmmm???

tv4

You want to film what? A pot of adobo made the way Marketman theorizes that it might have been made say, 200-300 years ago? Hmmm. I have been pretty consistent about turning down several offers to appear in television interviews or shows, but I did come close to doing a feature last Christmas on the gingerbread houses we make at home, and how some of the houses we make at a school are donated to various children’s wards in hospitals around the city. At the last minute, the television station’s insistence that I disclose my full name on camera, despite it being irrelevant to the story, put an end to that idea. And before that I declined to do a show with a visiting Australian chef for similar reasons. Then there was the request to do a story on the public school feeding program we all pursued last year. And radio plugs on other occasions. Basically, I have not wanted to draw attention to me personally, but to Marketman and Marketmanila.com. And I have only ever considered television exposure when it had some real positive benefit, such as bringing attention to charitable causes, or helping to increase local or regional awareness of the Philippines and more specifically, Filipino food. I thought I could still feed the marketmanila.com part of my life, but keep the rest of it relatively private, for a variety of reasons. So when two requests to appear on television arrived on practically the same day a couple of days ago, I was in a bit of a conundrum…

tv1

One request was to feature the Top 20 Pinoy Desserts post that I did a while back on a weekday evening program on a local channel. I gladly did a phone interview with the television program’s researcher, but begged off when they requested an on-camera interview, with name identified. They will hopefully just use a screen shot of the blog as the source of their material. I suspect it is like a 5-10 second blurb on favorite Filipino desserts, handled in a rather light manner. Happy to help, but didn’t think an on-camera interview was necessary. And as the air date for that program comes closer, I will post a quick blurb if you want to watch the program, though it will probably regurgitate information that you have already read on this blog. But the other request was a bit more complicated. A Singapore-based regional cable channel with viewers from the Middle East to New Zealand, was planning to film a 30 minute program on Manila and specifically on a favorite pinoy dish, adobo. I agreed to help, and eventually allowed myself to be cajoled into an on-camera interview…

The scheduled air date isn’t for another few weeks, and it will be aired in Manila, Singapore and every major Asian capital or country in their satellite footprint, as long as you have cable and access to this specific channel. The clip may be used, or it may end up totally cut out of the program, so let’s wait and see. I figured I would give readers an early head’s up and I will post program details a few days before the program is shown, so if you are curious about what Marketman looks (not a rear view) and sounds like, this will be the first chance to see me on television. What I thought would be a simple walk through a weekend market with a handheld videocam turned into a rather elaborate production, with 6-7 folks involved. It was a bit embarrassing, and I must admit I was feeling rather self-conscious…

And you would think an interview with just a few questions about adobo would take a minute or two to do, but as you can see from these photos, we spent an entire morning on what may be a couple of seconds worth of sound bites on this program featuring adobo… So stay tuned for more. Will let you know if this turns into anything worth marking your television viewing calendars for… :)

  1. Congratulations. It’ll probably bring more viewers to your blog as well. Hope someone shows the segment on youtube for those of us who don’t have access to the broadcast.

  2. You might end up being immortalized on YouTube if someone decides to upload a copy of the shows you’re in. =)

  3. WOW!…I know I should ask for a whold body photo from you with your signature. You are a celebrity!…pang international pa. I rarely watch cooking shows lately…but with Marketman as a host or even a guest, I wont let it pass. Keep us updated.

  4. Ganda umaga MarketMan!=) I have an idea what cable channel the feature might be shown and unfortunately we don’t have it in our cable *sad*=( but I wish you all the best for it! Keep us posted.

  5. How exciting! I’ll keep an eye for it on YouTube. Finally, I get to see the face behind the MarketManila fame.

  6. Good morning marketman!

Wow! They must’ve got you good to get you in front of the lens. I have to say though that I will be looking forward to it but on the flipside, I do hope you are prepared for your blog’s mob to run at you screaming if ever you are at Salcedo Market or your other favorite haunts… Hehehe!!!!

Still, congratulations! Congratulations! This milestone is a great testament to the great blog that is Marketmanila, and the great person behind it, MarketMan!

  7. wow! MM sa telebisyon! ano kayang channel naman yun, mahal naming MM? nanginginig pa!!!!

  8. Hi Marketman, will you be posting the correct answer to the poll you had before the current one on Chinatown dishes (what’s the priciest food according to weight?)

  9. Next thing you know, you will be asked for autographs while doing your shopping in Salcedo, Rustan’s or S&R! Pentel pen on your canvass totes, of course. =)

  10. Your success, in a small way, is shared by all of us who follow your column. We knew we had excellent taste to participate in your page.
    Congratulations!

  11. I liked the mystery and the curiosity surrounding your identity. However, I am happy that your contribution to Filipino cuisine is now being recognized internationally. Congratulations!

  12. Eagerly awaiting with anticipation to finally watch a show with MM as the star!

  13. Congrats MM! I will surely watch that.
Maybe next would be a recipe book that you can sell to us marketman fans? :-)

  14. Congrats po. Will eagerly wait for it. Guess….is it in PINAKA??? where the top 20 desserts will be featured?

  15. Hi MM,

That was quite a dilemma. Featuring you for a food theme but not showing your face or name would come off as some crime show interview. Part of your face will be in shadow or pixelated, then your name will be written as “Tonting” – not his real name. Real hush hush interview but you would be talking about adobo!

Haha, I can’t wait to see the real thing!

  16. Oh I’m sorry, it’s a weekday evening program. I will make another guess…..maybe in GMA’s 100% PINOY? Hehehe…..ang kulit ko, excited po kasi.

  17. if you went to Salcedo Market last rainy Saturday, you would see a tall man in Orange jacket, with a big basket(sosyal na bayong, or does it look like a bayong, the big bag on the top of this website). That’s MM !!!
Nice to see you again! You dont look that you gained weight from your Greece trip. Were looking forward to your show!

  18. it’s alright to use the fame of MM the blog. after all, it promotes pinoy food and travel. i understand your being reticent about personal exposure. but it isn’t about personal fame anymore is it? MM is a brand with a lot of goodwill for many, because of you. and in this information age, you and the blog share the same ID.

  19. How did they make you relent and blow your cover? Did they promise to place you in a sort of witness protection set-up thereafter?

  20. Can’t wait to catch the program!…Also, would love to know how you make adobo. I just can’t seem to get it right. Doesn’t help that most of my family is hopeless in the kitchen. Adobo in scandinavia-Yummy!

  21. HI EVERYONE, hahaha. Comments have spun out of control! :) I cannot divulge details until later, I don’t want to pre-empt the show. And I only helped them out, not starring at all… :) Michelle, I have detailed posts on adobo, a long recipe and a shortcut one, in the archives. Apicio, I don’t give everything away… :) Yikes, it seems at least three readers were at the market while we were shooting those segments! Lee, not quite, but that would have been a good time slot. Gosh, how super djahe this post will be if I end up as a 3 second blurb on the final program, if at all… leila, I will post details of local program as it gets closer to air time.

  22. hoy marketman!

pwede ko na bang i-announce sa salcedo market ang iyong tunay na identity??

  23. Congrats MM!!! Really glad to have stumbled upon this blogsite after looking for a great bacolod-style chicken inasal recipe. Becoming addicted to it so far. My hunch is Asian Food Channel, I love everything about that channel. More power to you and your work MM!!!

  24. Can’t wait to see it, i’ll probably get to watch it via youtube, so hopefully someone will upload it! :)

  25. oh, wow! this is like seeing the face of charlie in charlie’s angels….sorry – I watched this series when i was a kid…
but congratulations and looking forward to it. I hope I get to see it here in kathmandu.

  26. wow. sana mapanood ko to. pero ok lang, love the mystery. congratulations on you feature. :)
