Marketmanila turns 8!!!

It crept up on me, and I just realized, that, more or less, marketmanila.com has turned 8 years old (actually it passed unnoticed last September 1), while I was in the U.S. on a visit. In blog years, that feels like I turned 80. An old dog. :) Over the past 8 years, or roughly 3,000 days, I have managed to write 3,429 posts, many of them inane, some of them taking dozens of hours of hard work to craft, from the recipe testing, to the photography, writing, and responding to reader comments. That is the equivalent of 1.14 posts on average, every single day, rain or shine, fine or foul weather, cheery or fowl mood. And over that time, millions of page views and 123,000+ reader comments have been logged in as well. Frankly, I do feel like a bit of an octagenarian, and there is only so much one can think of to write, right? But with toes dipped in restaurants, running a family business(es), blogging, cooking, raising a terrific teen, etc., I have been spread a little thin lately…

And I have to admit, only because I will be forced to admit it in the days ahead, that I kept one little thing private from almost all of you for the past 4 years. The Teen appears in a magazine in the days ahead, and she is part of an article that will make it crystal clear why every September for the past four years, I have had a near blog meltdown and have seriously thought about putting the blog to rest at that time of year. September was a seriously downer month for me and Mrs. MM, but it’s all worked out well in the end. She made a bold decision on her own, she stuck it out, and she has truly enjoyed her experience. But you’ll have to figure out what local magazine it is on your own. And if you do figure it out, keep the name of the magazine to yourself, okay? I thought about buying every single newsstand copy to keep the “secret” a “secret”, but that would kill my holiday budget. :) It’s nothing nefarious, it’s just something that may surprise a few long-time suki readers, that’s all. For long-time readers, and there are many of you that date back to the first year or two, you will have read posts for nearly HALF of the Teen’s life!

Many, many thanks to all of marketmanila’s readers who have visited over and over again, even when I had nothing to say, or was away for extended periods of time. I am crazed over the next few weeks, but I promise to keep a few posts coming. Tomorrow is a staff Christmas party for 120 members of the Zubuchon family in Cebu (and Marketman, with two left feet, has spent 10+ hours over the last two months practicing the “Gang Nam” steps for a special opening number at that party)–gosh, what you wouldn’t give for a video of that I’m sure — but I am warning crew, I will zap them if they post it on youtube! We moved the party up, to avoid a SUPER TYPHOON barreling in on the Visayas, so keep your fingers crossed that the storm doesn’t do severe damage to that part of the country. We are opening a couple more Zubuchons in the months ahead, stay tuned for that. There is the annual holiday rush. Footloose, I have a photo of myself in THE JAMES BOND pea coat, albeit in a department store, and I didn’t actually buy it! And so much more. Thank you all for being a part of this community. I truly appreciate it. I think octagenarians are entitled to a really bongga birthday party, no? :)

  1. Gang Nam? Et tu Brute?

Oh, how so apropos. First introduction to your blog was about a typhoon too. Where people say “never looked back” to convey absence of regret, I have always looked back through the archives just to keep up.

  2. Thank you for your generosity, MM. I have enjoyed your glimpses and recipes for most of those 8 years!

Read about the party on Zubuchon’s Facebook page. I know everyone will have a grand time

  3. Happy birthday, Market Manila! A huge thank you to you, MM, Mrs. MM, the Teen and the Crew for making this blog possible. It’s been a wonderful way to feel connected to the Philippines, being in NYC.

Wishing you a Christmas full of love and delicious goodies!

  4. Congratulations!
Marketmanila.com is a site I never tire of visiting. There’s always something interesting to read and to learn. I rarely comment, but I read all the comments. I love that there is always a family feel to it… humor, tempers, drama included :).
I pray that you will continue to blog Mr. MM. We get withdrawal symptoms when you take a break, but your older posts sustain us ’til your new one.
Have a wonderful, albeit busy, holiday season!

  5. Congrats Mr MM. Thank you for maintaining the blog. Here’s to another 8 yrs of blogging . Cheers!

  6. Cannot say enough for the joy//knowledge/camaraderie acquired/relished over these past 8 years in following your blog, MM!! Salamat gid and thank you for your generosity of spirit and joie de vivre!! (and insatiable curiosity of all that surrounds us) Blessings of Christmas to you and family.

  10. Hello, I found your blog about 9 months ago. I am working my way from the very first post and I am currently on May 2008. I am so happy that I still have many many posts to go through, and that I will never run out of reading material!

I have never posted a comment but this latest post has drawn me out of the woodwork. I have found tons of information, entertainment, relaxation, and a renewed love/interest in everything Filipino through your posts. I live in North Cal, and the closest I can get to a great lechon is through marketmanila. I live vicariously through your travel posts. My family and I are going back to the Philippines in June of 2013. I am hoping we can get to Bohol for some broas and Cebu for freshly-roasted Zubuchon. I hope to visit local markets as well.

Thank you for all the effort and time that you put into this blog. I really appreciate them.

You are doing great at 8!

I envy the Zubu crew…..MM dancing the Gangnam??….Wow, what a treat!
I understand your apprehensions when it comes to your child’s privacy but I congratulate her…it is a feat to land in a nationwide magazine article. I will not search for it but I do hope to come across that article! :)
On another note, we finally have our first fresh Christmas tree at home! You are so very right…the smell is so fantastic and so worth it! It really does set you in the mood for the holidays! We have a wooden bowl under the tree where we kept the fallen needles swept daily and put a few silver xmas balls to look like eggs on a nest! I hope the tree last until at least Christmas eve.I reviewed your tips on caring for the tree. Thanks!
I hope and pray that supertyphoon Pablo will not be so devastating to leave a bleak Christmas in its path. Stay safe!

  21. it’s not among the choices, but i like to read this blog each day because i love to read each post no matter how short it is sometimes. I enjoy reading articles/posts where the writer writes as if he or she is talking to me.
    happy anniversary Marketmanila! :)

  22. Many lives have been made better because of Market Manila. Happy Birthday and looking forward to more years of information, laughter and madness! :)

  23. Congratulations! :) Your recipes (and experiments before that) have inspired me in so many ways and I couldn’t even remember how many of your recipes I tried: ensaymada, pandesal, sinigang with gabi, calamansi marmalade, etc. And made me want to try restaurants like Mamou and Zubuchon (of course!) And how do you rate the local-celebrity-sighting giddiness we feel when we see you? :)

And the biggest thing for me – my blog. Reading your blog helped me get to this point. Congrats again! :)

  24. Wow 8 years! Congratulations MM. Like many of the commenters, this blog has been a part of my every internet surfing and I appreciate the knowledge and adventures that you’ve shared over the years. My favorites are the travel related posts.

Read in the news today that the typhoon has weakened slightly but you never really know with these things. Keep safe. Enjoy the early Christmas party with your crew. It’ll be better if you don some cool shades ala Psy when you do your dance number.

  25. Has it been 8 years??? I remember I started reading your blog on September 2007. Back then I can count the commenters in here and kind of “know” them. It was like a small community then. Memories!

  26. Thank you so much for keeping this blog going MM!
Your thoughts, rants, reviews, recipes, struggles, travels, and successes have kept me entertained for the past 5 years.

Please keep up the good work and we look forward to more years of MarketManila!

    Ps.
Personally looking forward to Zubuchon opening in Manila!!!

  27. Thanks for the memories, for giving us a window to your food adventures, your rants, the feeding program and most recently, the launch of zubuchon.

Looks like your Christmas tree is already up and, from what I can see, it is very pretty.

  28. Happy belated anniversary! Thank you for sharing and inspiring me throughout the life of this blog. It has been a fount of useful information. :-)

  29. Congratulations, MM! Thank you for helping so many people, especially very busy moms (myself included), for 8 years!!! Here’s to 8 to the 8th to the 8th power more years!!!

Oh and it would be such a wonderful Christmas to see you do the Gangnam dance!!! Hmmm…maybe we should crash that party, only for the part of the dance! : )

  30. Happy birthday to MM the blog, and a massive thank you, to you MM. I think I discovered your blog some 5 years ago and despite many changes that have happened in my personal life, your blog is one of the things that has remained a constant. When (not if) you finally publish your book, I will be among those desperate for a copy. More power MM and family! :)

  38. I have enjoyed your blog very much over the years. I admire your principled stand on no ads and keeping your identity private. Very few have that self belief and conviction. I would love to know what the Teen is upto. I think you should plan a “coded” post for your faithful overseas readers who do not have access to the magazine. Keep going with the blog….

  39. Happy 8th year anniversary, Marketman!!! Looking forward to many many more posts in the years to come. Thanks a lot and Godspeed.

  46. Thank you very, very much MM for reviving my love for pinoy food. Thank you Mrs MM and Teen for sharing MM with us. Thanks, too, to the MM community for enhancing MM’s blogs. Thank you Ms Fishpan, Emilava, Cherry, Shittybank, Cebu Pacific and the likes for adding spice to the discussion. Thank you Footloose, Apicio, Silly Lolo and Lee for making us laugh and for the witty lines. Thank you Bettq for making me a better cook/wife (or so I’d like to think) :-)

This site has truly helped a lot of people in many different ways. Special mention to one of the Friday ladies who got a better job with better pay as our experiments using the recipes shared by MM, Sister and Bettyq improved her cooking skills which impressed an expat couple. She was offered a post in a Pinoy-friendly country!

More, more, more recipes, raves, rants, discussions please!

  47. Happy anniversary, MM! I just find that you have this gift of writing about everything and anything under the sun and making them really, really interesting. Though we may not share the same views on some topics, I keep reading your blog because there’s always something new to learn.. as I would say in Tagalog – “tumataas IQ ko!” haha! I just hope you’ll finally decide to open a restaurant in Manila :)

  48. Happy Anniversary Market Manila! Wishing you more success in business and many many many more mouthwatering posts to come! Thank you MM for this gem of a site.

    Cheers!

  49. Happy anniversary MM! Thanks for the generosity you have shown us through this blog. Whether the subjects are eye-opening, heartwarming, cringe-inducing, or just truly insightful, I always learn.

  50. Happy Birthday MM. Through this site, I share my “experimental” dishes sa staff ko sa Quezon. Yung mga nakakatikim ng luto ng assistant ko, na-su-surprise, kasi akala nila matandang matanda na ako sa mga itinituro kong pagkain and the use or the knowledge of ingredients, utensils, etc. Basically, bilib talaga sila, kaya salamat po. And thank you rin kay Ms. BettyQ, napakalawak ng naitulong mo sa blog na ito.

  51. Congratulations… Happy 8th Birthday!!! Happy Anniversary… Hope that this will continue… Maraming Salamat MM…

  52. Congratulations MM! Looking forward to more blog entries and finally dining in one of your Zubuchon restos in the near future.

  53. happy anniversary MM! been reading your blogs for several years now and I really appreciate the recipes you impart with your readers

  54. I must say that we viewers and commenters and lurkers are part of this woven banig of different strands and fibers called Market Manila. This has grown big, colorful with different highlights, streaks and centerpieces. Happy 8th anniversary to Market Manila.

  55. MM – Congratulations for such a milestone. Like many others, I live vicariously through your recipes, travels, rants and raves, and the lot. Please keep the articles coming…

BTW, “fowl mood”? Is that in keeping with the theme of this entire blog? hahaha!

Now, I’m curious about the Teen… I will however, respect her privacy (plus I don’t live locally so I will not have access to these scores of magazines). But I am pretty sure that she’s raised very, very well with parents like you.

  56. Happy 8th Marketman! Thanks for all the well-thought, well-written posts, a big part of my education in food, plus plus!
All the best to the Teen!

  57. Congrats and more power to this blog and Zubuchon!

It’s the friendships we’ve established thru this blog which are the true gems of your hard work, MM. It’s also nice to feel we belong to one big community despite our differences and physical distances from one another.

    Thank you so very much.

And to all my fellow readers, lurkers and followers of this blog, thank you as well. Your comments are what make this blog special. :)

  58. Many, many thanks, MM and Mrs. MM and your crew for 8 wonderful years. What you have given and taught me, I will treasure forever…as La Emp said, the cyber friends I have formed through your blog, I am eternally grateful…Footloose, for his never ending wealth of information like a walking encyclopedia, Lee and Silly Lolo(where are you?) fo making my stomach hurt with laughter, for Doc Connie, MP, Gej (my gardening buddy), EbbaBlue for making me remember our WIKA , Maria Clara for her never ending cooking wisdom she shared, North American friends I’ve met in person and through e mails ….and for all the 2012 FISHPAN nominees for bringing excitement as well.

Looking forward to meeting everybody one day in the very near future…I have met you and Mrs. MM, so that leaves Miss MM, your crew, Marketmanila.com family!

  59. Happy 8th and many, many more, MM. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
I am relatively new as I only started a few months ago but reading your blog has become part of my day. So, this recent “vacay” had me going back to read posts from the past and waiting patiently for new posts. Funny how that happens, huh? I absolutely love the varied subjects, recipes, photos, comments and entertainment. I even love the “raves” as it gives me validation that the same things that bug me also bug others.

What a wonderful community to have fallen into. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  60. MM…Gangnam I was watching the other day Ellen show and I told my husband, that is what we do at Zumba class with more “kembot” before he made it popular as well as Ellen in her intro dance. But my husband said that it is the accompanying music that makes it Gangnam!

  61. Happy 8th Birthday, Market Manila! I derive so much from your blog and miss the food so much!
May you have many more foodstuffs at your disposal and more recipes to share. The foodadventures are awesome!

  62. Congratulations to you and all the crew! It’s been 8 wonderful years to most…and maybe just 4 years for me. Have really enjoyed reading your blog, learned so much and from other readers of Marketmanila too. May you continue to prosper and hoping that the Teen will do as well as you!!!!

  63. MM, you may never know how many lives you have made happy and giddy with excitement with each new post you do. The discovery of the password for those posts which were password protected were all part of getting us excited as kids opening presents. And not to mention the countless recipes we enjoyed, and of course the comments of fellow readers always made our day complete. Thanks for letting us in in your world. Happy Anniversary and here’s looking at more anniversaries to come!

May the blog continue long after “The Teen” fully blooms into “The Lady.”

Reading the latest posts as well as those from the archives makes little difference in that they remain equally fresh and engaging. In other words, walang kupas despite eight years.

    Mabuhay at Maligayang Pasko! =)

  67. Yikes!! MM. Lolo na diay ka. Congratulations and belated happy birthday to your blog. I truly have enjoyed your blog and had referred back to the archives many a time for recipes. And, hope you had a fun time doing the gangnam. And am sure the Teen has turned into a beautiful butterfly. You have to let go. She is so precocious, isn’t she? It is difficult, I know how it feels.
Take care. Happy holidays to you and your family.

  68. Lee is absolutely right. MM, through your blog, Lee, Chris B, Joey, Edik, Lynell, Millet, Marla, and Roy have become real-life good friends. We’ve organized our own food tours or just find excuses to get together and eat. Thanks MM for making this kinship and trust possible.

  69. Congratulations, Mr. MM and happy 8th anniversary to your blog. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, recipes, and many others to us, your readers. I learned both from you and from reading the comments. You really are a gem in the blogging world. Happy holidays to you, your family, crew, and to all my fellow readers.

  70. I believe my very first interaction with your blog was your post on Persimmons on Nov, 2006. Since then had interacted with BettyQ and Maria Clara and we’ve exchanged emails and experiences on how to make home made hams, ensaymada, bibingka and puto bumbong to say the least, was it that long already? Time really flies. Happy 8th anniversary x 10 in blog years.

  71. again, maraming salamat po sa lahat. btw, i saw a picture of you and mrs. m in a magazine. what great skin she has. :)

  72. Congratulations! Your blog inspired me to make my own, and I am forever grateful for the things I’ve learned here!

Your blog helps me re-connect to the Philippines, and re-learn a lot of things I should have learned from my grandma. That’s what I get for not paying attention.

I hope you continue to post, and hopefully I could get Zubuchon! I wasn’t able to when I went back this year. Pipilitin ko talaga next time!

  73. Wow, 8 years! I’ve been reading your blog for the past 6-7 years, so I guess I grew up with Market Manila :) Congratulations MM!

  100. Happy Anniversary to marketmanila.com :) I’ve been reading the blog for around seven years, admittedly reading but hardly posting any comments. I’m glad that you still write witty posts, and have kept the integrity of your blog. It’s an admirable quality.

I read that magazine issue where The Teen was featured.
