Once in a Blue Moon / Live Lunar Eclipse Blogging

eclipse1

These photos were taken just minutes ago. Since most folks in Luzon can’t see the full lunar eclipse this evening due to cloud cover, I am posting these photos from less cloudy Cebu. Taken from the top of a 24 storey building with a standard point and shoot canon camera, they are unaltered, unphotoshopped and colored as the camera captured the moon. I have been looking up at the sky for the past few hours but couldn’t find the moon, until about 25 minutes ago…

Natural phenomenon such as eclipses have always fascinated me. And since something rather serendipitous happened to me (and my siblings) this afternoon, a small gift from someone who has long since passed away, I am grinning from ear to ear about it being something that would only happen “once in a blue moon” indeed. While the newspapers and press have said this would be a red moon, it must have turned blue for a split second for Marketman’s sake… :)

  1. Hi MM! It must have been a true blue experience! Sobrang ganda ng kuha mo…totoo! Thanks for sharing the photos with us.

  2. Thanks MM for these photos. I hope you’ll be able to post some other pictures for this. I am one of those unfortunate person who cant witness the phenomenon. It’s only 4pm here.. I have to watch TFC tomorrow for the delayed updates..

  3. Lucky you!!! We are experiencing a very cloudy evening here in Mindoro. It could have been quite spectacular but then…Cebu has clearer skies :-)! Thank you for sharing these valuable pics with us. We were really waiting for it to appear here as well!

  4. Hey MM~

Just a note… the term “blue moon” from the expression “once in a blue moon” means the second full moon in the same month. If a full moon happens during the 1st or 2nd day of the month, then another happens on the 30th or 31st, then the latter, is the blue moon.

  5. those are magnificent photos,MM! i couldn’t hope to catch the eclipse from my vantage point here in manila, but your photos are just so vivid that you made the experience just as real for me. thanks!

  6. the whole moon looked kind of vague and misty at around 9.30pm. no clouds around it, just a fuzzy looking moon. it’s the Month of the Hungry Ghosts in Singapore, where i just spent 2 weeks for a very sad family event. the moon tonight suits our rather depressed mood…

  7. My husband woke me up around 1:45 a.m. (Northern California) just so that “we” can see it. We sat on the steps in front of our house while the neighborhood slept (which was something I wanted to go back and do) just waiting and waiting. After 20 minutes or so, we gave up (or shall I say “I” gave up). I took whatever pix I could but yours are totally awesome! :-) Went back to bed and woke up at 5:00 a.m. No wonder I’m still sleepy at work. :-) Have a good one!

  8. I tried to find the moon a while ago but it is so cloudy…sigh. Thanks for posting a wonderful pic of the eclipse.

  9. An awesome spectacle! I live in Northern California–woke up at 2:30am and watched the eclipse transpired until 4:20am. I was so keyed up that I didn’t need an alarm to wake me up at 2:30am.

  10. We in NZ are lucky enough to witness the ‘redding of the moon’ at a decent time of 8pm onwards – although the clouds (in Auckland) made viewing a little patchy. It was truly awesome!

  11. LT, I actually knew that the blue moon was the second one of the month, which happens rarely, but a literal “BLUE” moon seemed cooler, no? It was terrific to behold.

  12. Awesome, blue and red moon. I was in a big hurry to attend a client’s party yesterday that I missed this “once in a blue and red moon” thing! Sayang! Thanks for posting the photos.

  13. wow nice pix MM..i have always been fascinated with anything connected to the moon but was pretty busy last night to catch a glimpse of the eclipse.but your pix showed me how much i missed :(
