Orange (Coral) Crocs

croc1

I just couldn’t believe my eyes. A totally new, almost full, display shelf of crocs in several colors and sizes, just as you enter the True Value outlet at the basement of Rockwell mall. Amazing! My heart rate actually jumped. croc3I quickly started searching for my size in my preferred colors…olive, khaki, blue, tan, etc. But they had nothing over size 10 and I am a certain 11… Until I got to orange (oops, they are “coral” according to the tag)! And there was a 12 in tan I think. No, I did not make a conscious effort to have the same colored clogs as Mario Batali, but I would rather wear orange than not have the crocs at all. What’s the big deal about these bizarre and clunky looking shoes/footwear anyway?? They are incredibly comfortable. I haven’t taken them off since I bought them this morning. Until I took these photos, that is…

They are light, soft, airy and just perfect for anyone in a hot kitchen slaving away at perfecting a budbud recipe or baking a duck or chopping veggies to release tension. These are the real McCoy (WHY do they say that? Who is McCoy?)… croc2At PHP 2300+, they are pricey but just a touch above the internet price in the U.S., not counting delivery…so I am happy to pay the slight premium for the convenience of picking them up right at the local mall. I thought I should be circumspect, perhaps place the crocs discreetly on my Santa wishlist but the hoarder in me said “Are you nuts, there is only one size 11, good luck buddy if you think those are still going to be there next month!” so if I were you and were lusting after these icons of cooks, rush over and get a pair NOW!!! The model I got is called the “Professional” with closed tops so I don’t get burned if I spill hot liquid on my feet. The manufacturer has other cool styles, visit their website here. I hope they re-stock before Christmas because I want another pair for the beach!

  1. I love crocs! I wear them if I have to do a lot of errands. I’m glad it’s readily available in Manila. It’s slightly cheaper to buy in Hong Kong though.

  2. PHP 2300+ for a pair of clogs?!? Be careful, MM, this could turn out to be another fish pan/elitista brouhaha, hehe…

BTW, nuclear orange! Just like that sweet Star Margarine!

  3. MM, Crocs have taken over Singapore!

Just this Sunday, I played count-the-number-of-people-using-crocs with my hubby in Raffles City for fun. We were waiting for someone and were getting bored, so… In that 20-min wait, wah, no less than 30 people of all ages and sizes zipped past us in an array of Crocs colours. (I think the small Crocs for kiddos are lovely.)

And just to cement the fact that the Crocs have arrived? Some alleyway shops here sell fakes already. Harrumph!

  4. argh. not you too! i *hate* crocs with a passion. they are EVERYWHERE here — yikes, even some grocery stores. yes, they are comfortable. but i wish they’d make them “prettier”!!! surely there’s a point where comfort and beauty meet? or maybe beauty is in the eye of beholder LOL.

  5. Stef — funny you say they’re ugly because that’s exactly what the Crocs campaign unapologetically says — that they’re darn fugly but heck, they make money!

MM! Brave soul you are for choosing Orange! Orangea glad they had it in orange??? Nyar, nyar.

  6. Love love love crocs. Mine are red, kids have yellow/blue/fuschia and hubby has (boring!) black! Perfect for warm weather, perfect for rainy weather (but not baha!) Bringing an orange pair home as pasalubong for my groovy aunt. MM, maybe ask your sister to buy for you in NY, gazillion colors (at the runner’s store in Grand Central or Paragon) and cheaper too.

  7. CLOGS! I have black leather ones COLORADO brand and i wear them everyday to work well worth the price- good for walking up and down the hill, very comfy, you can take your feet out for a breather too- good and healthy for the feet. I leave my high heels for walking around the office only and weal the crocs/clogs for chasing the bus.

  8. I love seeing my 1 yr. old nephew zooming about with his crocs like its the comfiest and lightest thing. His is army green but I love orange on guys, so am sure it looks good on you.

  9. Ala Molto Mario style. :) Used to wear these types of clogs when my husband was an OR tech in the military. Comfortable.

  10. LOL i know Gigi. still don’t have to like the way they look though — i did get blue ones to go with my kitchen. but i don’t wear them out of the house.

  11. I got myself the ballet slipper type of Crocs and they’re SUPER comfortable! They’re not the prettiest shoes, but I love how they feel. I do, however, like their thong versions with the bright colors. Nice choice of color, MM!

  12. mmmmmm…..what’s all these fuss over a footwear ?
…… haven’t seen it here yet ……have to look out for these, almost everyone of you guys saying it’s comfortable……

  13. BTW, on “real McCoy” — McCoy was a pottery maker somewhere in NJ (I think.) His pottery had a specific mark “McCoy” and that is how you could tell which one was his, and which one was not (from among his many imitators), hence the birth of the expression the “real McCoy”. McCoy pottery is now very collectible and can be very valuable.

  14. Wow, I have to get a pair, MM. Though I don’t cook, I stand for as long as 3 hours when I have to deliver lectures and because of a knee surgery (not to mention my weight), my feet hurt like hell at the end of this. Somebody once told me that Crocs are what I need but this is the first time I heard that they’re now available here. Thanks for this tip!

  15. omg, you should see the nurses and aides wearing those over here. you’ll think its the best thing ever made since slice bread. they say it’s light, comfortable and best for walking along the hospital corridors or running during codes or just plain standing around to chat. even male nurses and aides wear them. and they dont cost as much too. maka-try nga.

  16. i just got my pair from nordstrom for $30 and its super comfy, i wear them to work (i’m not a nurse or a chef)but i don’t drive so i walk a lot. i am going to buy one for my son, the time i bought mine he is too grumpy and don’t want to try them on.

  17. I wear clogs all the time–not Crocs but Danskos. Crocs are popular in the spring and summer here in the US, though I think most people use them for gardening rather than for the kitchen. A magazine review said they’re not so great because little twigs and pebbles get into the holes. So yeah, I’m more of a Dansko fan than a Croc lover. (And that’s what I learned after suffering in high heeled, pointy-toed, no cushioning or arch-support shoes for years.)

  18. oh gosh, you’re hooked! i got a pair of bright yellow ones (with holes on top too) and have been wearing them everywhere since. I call them my Swiss Cheese shoes. people do take a second look, and it’s started a lot of conversations with strangers, at ballgames, grocery stores, home depot – everywhere! my husband hates them but kids love it. my little 2-year old nephew would poke his chubby fingers into the holes when I wasn’t looking. They’re proudly Colorado made btw…

  19. Yeap, these fuglies have been worn in hospitals for years. Very comfy and waterproof, protects you from all the gooey splashes especially if you’re working the DR and the OR. Wooo, bright orange, nice!

  20. and they’re great for wearing on the beach and snorkeling among the corals, too, so your feet don’t get scratched by the corals. that happens. in davao, anyway.

  21. Okay, I now know what to get you for Christmas. They are available in every color around the corner on 72nd and Third.
You mean these have replaced clogs in the kitchen? Husband says I need steel toed boots, just singed my toes shutting the broiler door with my toes. No more barefoot cooking.

  22. I collect them, hehe So far I have bought 5 McCoys and 3 spoofs. I had intended to use them mainly for gardening because they’re washable, just spray them with the garden hose. My mistake was buying mostly the ones with holes. Not only will you get dirty feet, I hate dirt in my toenails and twigs getting in the hole and stubbing your toes, it will also give you polka dot feet in the summer with the sun going thru the holes. They are the most comfortable lightweight shoes. No pinching my wide width feet and the colors are fun!.

  23. Hallo! What’s with these clogs???Mate they are so ugly!Nothing you can do or say can change my mind about them.We have them here too in Australia and my daughter and I just hate the look!Okay they might be super comfortable but jeez can they at least make them easier to the eye!

  24. I love my crocs. I think i have 10 pairs in different models. My latest piece in my collection is the PRIMA model. Its not as bulky as the beach but has the exact same comfort. Check it out at Rustans. You could also find Crocs in Nothing but Water, SPF, Planet Sports, Toby’s, Kids station, Kids sports and Scuba world.

  25. yahooo!!!! finally after more than a week of no electricity and no internet connection i could visit Market Manila again and check my email etc. . . imagine that, 1 week, no electricity here at home, I couldn’t even buy food stuff to store in the chiller. . . :)

I saw those clogs yesterday at Toby’s Sports Arena, they really look good and it’s very lightweight, pricey. . . hehe I wanted to buy one, but my Sanita chefs clogs are still in perfect shape.

  26. Oooh, CROCS! I was thinking of getting a pair to use in my kitchen, and orange is a fantastic almost obnoxious color. I’m reminded of this article in CNN Money and how other “ugly” shoes like Uggs, Birks, Jellies and Earth Shoes have become popular.

  27. I also don’t like how they look. I tried one on because I have bone spurs and they said it was really comfortable but I couldn’t get over how wide and clunky they are and I felt like they made me look like I was all feet!

  28. Thanks for the stocking stuffer idea MM (Crocs in Christmas socks hehehe!). Perfect for my folks daily gardening/farming… and in my dad’s favorite color too!

  29. Maricel, I don’t care much for how they look either, especially on me. I feel like a duck waddling away in them, and feel frumpy. But they are indeed comfy, so I got myself the slim ballet slipper type. But if I wear a chef, hidden in the kitchen, I would probably consider wearing those pictured above.

  30. they’ve had them in true value since about december last year… i’m on my second pair of the BEACH style already. i’ve also got 2 (the new Mary Jane style) on the way from the US! :) yes, i’m addicted, but i think that if the croc-haters out there were to wear them for even 10 minutes, they’d change their minds.

by the way, for the ladies who “just can’t stand how they look,” they now have the flip-flop style, the ballet slipper and soon, the mary janes.

  31. We love our crocs! Lightweight, bacteriostatic, quick-drying and COMFY! I too found them ugly at first but now I’m a convert… Nordstrom’s sells “buttons” that you can use to decorate the holes in your Crocs—there are letters, smiley faces, “rhinestones” etc.

  32. I’ve often seen Crocs in malls. The clogs I’ve worn back don’t come close to it. But I haven’t tried wearing Crocs…

  33. sigh. why do comfy shoes have to be so ugly sometimes? i heard they make ballet flats though, so those might be worth checking out…

  34. Hi! I tried sending you an email, but couldn’t seem to get through for some reason. Anyway, I’m a contributing writer for Clickthecity.com and i’ve written a short article featuring your website and other blogs that are as interesting and informative. Since photos are required for each of our articles, I was hoping that you will grant me authority to post a screenshot of your homepage as part of the piece. Please let me know. Thank you, and keep up the great work!

  35. Hi I really love my Crocs, i have the beach, professional and athens models. they are so comfy, i cant imagine myself putting on any other pair of footwear. I got my Crocs at Rustan’s. But i know of other places where to find them like SPF,Nothing But Water, Spin, Havin a Baby, Planet Sports, Toby’s, Kidz Station and i think there are more stores that carry them here in Manila. Anyway, a friend of mine from Mindanao said that he saw them also in Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu.

  36. They might be comfy but I still don’t like the way they look. I don’t think I will be buying these cause I’m the type who’s guilty of putting fashion first before comfort. But it looks good on kids though.

  37. Omigosh!!! Who would have thought these coral shoes would elicit so many comments?! Heehee. I will mostly be wearing these at home but I have to say, they are incredibly comfortable. Now if only someone applied the same principle to designing an office/computer chair that is as comfortable!

  38. ooh! i want them too!! i am addicted to birks.. but i also would want one of those.. maybe in hot pink!! hehehe!! i love wearing them to the ofc since i used to work in a call center.. feels like am just home.. i’ve had several pairs and i would never get tired of them.. now i know what to ask my sister in vegas for xmas..hehehe.. thanks for always sharing wonderful ideas!!!

  39. I’ve worn birks, sanita’s… even own pairs of havaiannas. Nothing comes close to the comfort that a pair of Crocs can provide. You just have to try on a pair and see for your self. I think we’ll get some positive feedback from most crocs haters out there. If you find the clogs too wide and clunky, i recommend you try on a pair of prima’s. It’s gives the same comfort but in a more fashionable package.

  40. Crocs is the best!!! I use it everywhere, from morning to night! When i’m walking the dog, washing my cruiser, going to the mall, visiting sites, going out with the family and friends etc. It’s great that they keep on having newer models, youre never gonna be satisfied with just one pair or one model! I bought mine at Rustan’s, but you can get it at SPF, Nothing But Water, True Value.:-)

  41. Goes to show how strange my taste is…The first time I saw Crocs, I didn’t find them ugly AT ALL; I thought they were adorable! It didn’t cross my mind to buy them, though, because I thought they’d be hot (being rubber), and I don’t like to follow trends. However, after hearing all your raves about Crocs’ unbeatable comfort and seeing the other styles, I just might check them out. I hope they have the purple ones in Manila!

  42. A word of caution though, be sure to stand away from the sides and front (yellow lines) when you go on an escalator wearing these…one ate a big chunk off my son’s crocs toe (thankfully HIS toes were fine). They’re so pliable that they can slip under the steps.

  43. RM, shows you how late to the party I can be!!! I went to the link and am amused. Most Filipinos should love these shoes, they add 2-3 inches in HEIGHT! Heehee. Katrina, I think they had purple! And geez, I am amazed by reader reaction to this post!

  44. See, it’s those MBT shoes I find ugly. I’d love to receive their health benefits, but I would only wear them to the gym, not outside.

And MM, why be amazed at the reaction? Your topic is, after all, shoes; your readership, Filipino. Remember all the comments you got on your driving shoes? :-)

  45. Crocs Rocks! I’m a huge fan of these funky, fashionable and COMFORTABLE shoes! It’s a fashion statement, i think. Especially love wearing them after gym, strolling in the mall, in the beach or wherever. Only shoe that allows me to walk tirelessly for hours and hours! It’s like walking on marchmallows minus the gooish feeling of course :) I started with Beach but now i’m collecting all the models. In Manila where i stay, they can be found in all Rustans outlets, Nothing But Water, true Value, SPF and Big & Small. Geesh! whoever said you can’t get comfort and style in one shoe obviously hasn’t tried Crocs!

  46. Crocs’ version of the flipflops…Athens i think it’s called- are the best invention since instant coffee! they are INCREDIBLE and the colors are fabulous!

  47. crocs is really cool! I have 2 pairs of prima, cotton candy & light blue in color. aside from comfort & very light material, it’s also fashionable to match with jeans & even duty uniforms in hospital. luv it!!!!!
