And the Winners of the Steamers and Pineapple Eye Removers are… :)

First, let me say, if I had unlimited funds and unlimited luggage allowance, I would have brought steamers and pineapple eye removers for all of you… I know what it’s like to be away from home and to want just a little taste of something you recall from a particularly special time, be it some puto bumbong and ginger tea at a misa de gallo or a trip to the beach, stopping off for pineapples in Tagaytay. But the reality is, boxed, two puto bumbong steamers are nearly 80% of one suitcase! :)

So operating on the concept that a couple of these items is better than none, here are the lucky winners:

For the puto bumbong steamer, complete with four bamboo thingamajigs (and I CANNOT guarantee I will get these by U.S. customs in Detroit!):

“14” “Hway54” — For the sole reason that my mom was the only one I knew who continued to refer to the road as such, when it was already being referred to as EDSA decades ago. In fact, we lost a car rallye in the early 1970’s (a treasure hunt of sorts) as my mom didn’t know what EDSA was. :)

Betty Q – a second steamer acquired and being sent your way. A thank you from MM and the rest of the readers of the blog!

Special mention to “Jessie R”, while I can’t bring a third steamer on this trip, if I remember the next time, I hope I can bring you just a little slice of your fond memories for puto bumbong from home then…

For the pineapple eye remover:

“93” “Bearhug0127” – I will be mailing you your prize.

“24” “Natie” – Our anonymous donor in the U.S. with an extra pineapple eye remover will be generously mailing you your goody.

Many thanks to all for participating. Winners MUST send me your mailing addresses over the next day or two as I hope to mail these items out by Monday, New England time. Salamat!

  12. MM, you should be aware that in the recent year US Customs have become more active in enforcing the Lacey Act, which prohibits import of illegally harvested or obtained flora and fauna. Thus all products made of wood or contains wooden components are subject to this law. The bamboo parts of the steamer are smallish but may still get flagged at the discretion of the US Customs officer. But not to worry, a little research and a completed short form should get you through. Below is the Lacey Act briefly described by the USCBP site, and here is the link to the required form: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/lacey_act/downloads/declarationform.pdf

The Lacey Act (16 U.S.C. 3371 et seq., the Act) as amended makes it unlawful to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, or purchase in interstate or foreign commerce any plant, with some limited exceptions, taken or traded in violation of the laws of the United States, a U.S. State or a foreign country. On September 2, 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) published a notice in the Federal Register announcing a revised enforcement phase in plan for the Act’s requirement for a plant product import declaration (see 74 Fed. Reg. 45415 for details). ( USDA: Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service ) The revised plan identifies a list of products and the associated Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) Chapter or Heading as to which the requirement for a Plant Product Declaration Form (PPQ 505) is anticipated to be enforced.

  13. tercer, yipes, at least I will be able to talk my way through trying to convince them to let in some bamboo thingees. I have all of the winners addresses now, so keep your fingers crossed… :)

  14. Bettyq: so jealous but am happy for you and other winners! And I share Mari of NY’s sentiments: wouldn’t it be a blast to come over and learn how to make this dee-lish treat??? MM: safe travels, and wishing you and family a lovely Thanksgiving!

  15. tercer et al, they made it through with nary a question, inspection or stop… now surfing at an airline lounge, waiting for a connecting flight. :)

  16. Excellent! Never quite sure if and when they will hit you with it. There’s been some incidents with guitars because they are quite obvious. Anyway, good job and I wish you and your family a very happy and safe holiday season.

  17. Mother Nature is smiling on MM and family..Thanksgiving week will have mild temperatures. Welcome back!!

  18. Natie…thanks for the weather update. Hubby and friends will enjoy NY after all. Hey, MM …maybe they will run into you. He knows what you look like.

  19. bettyq, you are very welcome!! you should come, too!! send me a picture of you and the steamer–or the delicious bumbongs…mq q. and MM might just bump into each other in the frenetic city this holiday..

  20. natie, it’s the morning after I arrived, and where we are it was 16F at the crack of dawn today! Yipes, tha’s COLD when you are coming form 90F Manila weather! :) NY will seem like Indian summer after a few days in the woods… :)

  21. Ms BettyQ – I would love to be your neighbour! :) I wish I’m in the west coast, any chance of moving east towards toronto? hehehhe

  22. Bearhug0127 and Natie are both Jersey… so am I. Maybe we can get together and set up an East Coast MM fan club?

  23. This is my first time in this website and I am enjoying it and learning many more and most specially the comments and what people think. Now I will put this in my favorites.

The reason why I gravitated to this website is I am looking for pineapple eye remover. Is there a way I could buy this here or I am willing to pay for shipping if it’s coming from Manila. I just love to have it so my family can always eat fresh pineapple.

    Thank you so much.
